First edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to his daughter 'To Joanna who inspired this book, from Dad, Christmas 1963' to front free endpaper; 4to (265 x 210 mm); occasional light finger-soiling marks to some margins but still very bright; publisher's pictorial boards, a little soiled, extremities rubbed and creased, dust-jacket, closed tear to upper panel, spine ends frayed and nicked, spine faded, light surface dirt but given the provenance, a rare survival in relatively good condition.…

Signed, limited edition, no.37 of only 40 copies of the deluxe Special Edition (the most deluxe and only signed format in the total edition of 120 copies),large folio, quarter bound in Nigerian goatskin, with Bird's Nest wallpaper design to boards, and containing sheets or parts of sheets of 7 original Bawden wallpapers, accompanied by whole sheets of the Riviera and Facade papers in a separate portfolio, and signed by author and artist, also containing full-colour reproductions of 8 papers for which actual samples are not available, as well as reproductions of two unpublished designs for wallpapers by Bawden which were never taken up by the Curwen Press, and a series of monochrome photographs, pp.32 text; crease to fore-edge of Plate 1 (Tree and Cow), plates 2 and 6 also have slight creasing to fore-edge/corners, an otherwise fine copy, housed in very good cloth- and paper-covered slipcase. Designed by Lizzie Ballantyne, and printed on Gardapat Kiara stock by Deckers Snoeck, Ghent, this striking production investigates an aspect of a career that has been neglected by recent admirers, namely Bawden's role, in the 1930s, as an acclaimed modern painter. This book assembles the largest collection of the artist's pre-war watercolours. Most were originally exhibited at one of Bawden's major solo shows - at the Zwemmer Gallery in 1933, or at the Leicester Galleries in '38, and have been subsequently enjoyed in private collections.
