El primero es un relato de una expedición española enviada desde México para explorar la costa noroeste de América en 1775, la segunda una cuenta de una operación de levantamiento en el Estrecho de Magallanes en 1827. El tercer elemento es el diario de un viaje de 1828-1831 de formular observaciones en el Atlántico Sur para determinar la forma de la Tierra y para determinar las longitudes de varios puertos.
