Hochdorf, Kt. Luzern 1810-1876 Schänis, Kt. St. Gallen), Profess in Rheinau 1829, Priester 1833, Abt 1859 bis zur Aufhebung des Klosters 1862, dann Beichtiger im Kloster St. Katharinental, seit 1869 in Schänis (HBLS, mit Rohners biographischer Predigt als Referenz; vgl. Professbuch Rheinau, Äbte Nr. 59 u. Professen Nr. 218; nicht mehr in HLS) - "Im Januar 1857 reiste er mit dem Prior Fridolin Waltenspül nach Karlsruhe, um mit der Fürsprache der Großherzogin Stephanie von Baden bei Kaiser Napoleon III. den Fortbestand des schon seit 1836 unter staatlicher Verwaltung stehenden Klosters zu erwirken. [.] Nach der Aufhebung des über 1000 Jahre alten Klosters [.] 1862 ging er als Visitator und Spiritual (1868) zu den Dominikanerinnen nach St. Katharinenthal und, als auch dieses Kloster 1869 aufgehoben wurde, mit den Schwestern nach Schänis. Dort starb er am 7. September 1876. Seine sterblichen Überreste wurden später nach Rheinau überführt. [.] Das Archiv der Abtei Rheinau hatte der vertriebene Prälat mitnehmen dürfen, es fiel größtenteils dem Staatsarchiv des Kantons Zürich zu. Seinen Abtstab und seine Inful hatte Ineichen kurz vor seinem Tod an die junge Abtei Beuron geschickt." (Biographia Benedictina) - "Am 11. "Alfred Escher war der Hauptbefürworter der Aufhebung. [.] Das etwa drei Millionen Franken betragende Stiftsvermögen fiel an den Staat Zürich, welcher es gemäss Grossratsbeschluss vom 1. VII. 1863 teils für die Unterstützung der katholischen Gemeinden, teils für Armen- und Bildungszwecke verwendete." (etc.; HBLS). - "Mit der Säkularisation wurde der Rheinauer Weinkeller mit dem Spitalkeller zum Zürcher Staatskeller. Die klösterlichen Bibliotheksbestände befinden sich hauptsächlich in der Zentralbibliothek Zürich (u.a. 13'000 Drucke). Die Schätze des Rheinauer Kunstkabinetts, laut Inventar von 1818 gut 2'300 Werke, wurden grösstenteils verkauft. Z.Z. sind davon etwa 200 Stücke lokalisiert, so auch der Fintansbecher im Musée de Cluny in Paris und die romanische Reliquienbüste des hl. Mauritius im Landesmuseum." (HLS, Kloster Rheinau) -- P. Beat stellt seine Rede unter das Jesuswort: "Si mundus vos odit, scitote, quia me priorem vobis odio habuit - Wenn euch die Welt hasst, so wisset, dass sie mich zuvor gehasst hat" (Joh. 15, 18) - Die Ereignisse im Zuge des Risorgimento, der nationalen Einigung Italiens, der Einnahme des Kirchenstaates 1870 und der sog. Garantiegesetze betreffend den Vatikanstaat, die mühevolle Römische Frage um die Souveränität desselben, sowie die Massnahmen, die den amtierenden Papst Pius IX. (Pio Nono) in Drangsal brachten, lösten in romtreuen (ultramontanen) Kreisen nachhaltige Empörung aus. So auch beim Festprediger, der diese aktuellen politischen Prozesse und Auswirkungen zum Anlass für seine Ausführungen vor den Aargauer Pilgern am Dienstag 4. Juli 1871 wählte: "200 Millionen Katholiken haben gemeinsam ihre Hände und ihr Herz zum Himmel erhoben für ihren geliebten Vater und Lehrer [.]. Und [.] dies Alles war nur die Fortsetzung und der Glanzpunkt von dem, was die Gläubigen [.] seit dem 20. September letzten Jahres getan haben, seitdem der Stellvertreter Jesu Christi seines letzten Eigenthums beraubt, in seiner Wohnung gefangen und beschimpft ist. [.] Warum also verhängt Gott der Allmächtige so harte Prüfungen über die heilige Kirche und ihr Oberhaupt - und welche Lehren knüpfen sich hieran für die Gläubigen?" (etc.; p. 3 f.) - Ob sich dann die Aargauer Wallfahrter von P. Beats etwas abgehoben-theoretisch-unverbindlichen Deutungen, seiner Huldigung und seinem moralischen Appell im Geist des (militanten) politischen Katholizismus auch persönlich angesprochen fühlten, scheint eher fraglich: "Nun denn, meine lieben Zuhörer, nur muthig und unverzagt! Halten wir entschieden zur Partei Gottes, zur Parthei der katholischen Kirche, zur Parthei des Papstes, zur Parthei unsers Diözesanbischofes, und zur Partei des Rechtes, und wenn Gott mit uns, wer ist dann wider uns (Röm. 8, 31)." Beats legalistischen Betrachtungen war primär die als Sanktion bei Nichtbeachtung des Unfehlbarkeitsdogmas angedrohte Exkommunikation. Hinzu gekommen sein mag die frühe, Aufsehen erregende Exkommunikation von Joseph Ignaz v. Döllinger im April 1871 durch den Münchner Erzbischof Gregor v. Scherr (ADB). - Auch in der Schweiz kam es zur "offenen Auseinandersetzung [.] nach der Definition des Dogmas über den päpstlichen Primat und die päpstl. Unfehlbarkeit auf dem 1. Vatikanum. [.] Innerhalb der Katholiken formierte sich [.] ein Teil des liberal-radikalen Lagers und spaltete sich als Christkatholische Kirche von der röm.-kath. Kirche ab. Der politische Radikalismus ergriff die Gelegenheit, den Konflikt im Zusammenhang mit den in Gang gebrachten Verhandlungen über die Revision der Bundesverfassung hochzuspielen." (etc.; HLS, Kulturkampf, Abschn. 2) - "Bei der religiösen Bewegung der Gegenwart, bei den manigfachen [sic] Eingriffen der Staatsgewalt in kirchliche Rechte und Güter, besonders aber bei Anlaß des durch das letzte ökumenische Konzil aufgestellten Dogma der päpstlichen Unfehlbarkeit sahen sich einzelne Bischöfe genöthigt, einzelne untergebene Priester und Laien, welche die geforderte Unterwerfung hartnäckig verweigerten, mit der Exkommunikation zu belegen. Auch in der Schweiz sah sich ein Diözesanbischof [Eugène Lachat, Basel] genöthiget, diese traurige Strafe über einen renitenten Priester [Paulin Gschwind in Starrkirch-Dulliken SO] zu verhängen. Eine überaus große Anzahl Katholiken aber zieht sich diese Strafe ohne vorhergehenden bischöflichen Richterspruch zu, indem sie diesem Dogma den innern gläubigen Consens nicht geben. So ist es gewiß zeitgemäß, die rechtlichen Wirkungen dieser größten Kirchenstrafe zu erörtern. Die Exkommunikation ist eine kirchliche Strafe, durch welche einem Mitgliede der Kirche alle geistigen Güter entzogen werden." (etc.; p. 3) - In 7 Abschnitten erläutert P. Beat die 'Wirkungen dieser Kirchenstrafe' um abschliessend quasi deren - systemimmanente - (Auf-) Lösung zu skizzieren: "Bezüglich der Absolution eines Exkommunizierten begnügen wir uns, weil nicht streng in den Kreis unseres Stoffes gehörend, die kirchlichen Bestimmungen [.] anzufügen" (p. 28) - um gleich danach nochmals die Keule zu schwingen: "Zum Schlusse braucht wohl nicht darauf aufmerksam gemacht zu werden, daß die Kirchenobern unter Umständen berechtigt, beziehungsweise verpflichtet sind, solche Mitglieder [.], die [.] ihren verbrecherischen Lebenswandel nicht ablegen oder fortgesetzt und hartnäckig gegen den Glauben und die Rechte der Kirche kämpfen, durch Richterspruch öffentlich und namentlich zu exkommunizieren" (p. 29). -- P.
