In a half calf binding. A collection of twelve of the monthly periodicals from Brown's Book-Stall, edited by the publisher A. Brown & Co., covering the year 1894. The Christmas edition periodical for 1894 was the last one they ever published. Frontispiece depicting a the art saloon of Brown's bookshop. 1 plate depicting Dunnottar Castle by J. Beattie-Scott, supplement to "Brown's Bookstall," Xmas, 1894. Two photographs of the bookshop frontage in 1785 and 1894 accompanying the text. These periodicals contain articles about the history of book-buying and booksellers; advertisements for the various magazines they sell each month in the bookshop, and for Brown's fine art exhibition in their art saloon; descriptive portraits and obituaries of advertisers and contributors; amusing anecdotes concerning the men of Aberdeen; poetry; and book recommendations. They also contain some very charming Victorian advertisements for other companies. Alexander Brown's bookshop was opened in 1785, advertised as a "Booksellers, Bookbinders, Stationers, Circulating Library, Art Salon". Brown also served as Provost of Aberdeen between 1822-1823 and 1826-1827. In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with a little rubbing to the spine and extremities. Hinges and joints are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, except for the odd spot to the first few pages. Very Good. book.
