Age-toning to external page edges and text pages, else internally clean. Text block is snug. Cream paper dust jacket with black text. Horizontal fold in the center of entire jacket and vertical fold down the center of spine. Back panel shows their route on a map of the United States. Dust jacket spine is sunned, soiled overall, and with a number of closed and open tears including loss of 1 1/4" by 3/16" on the upper edge of back fore-edge fold and with an adjacent 7/8" closed tear along the fold; corners and edges at head and tail of jacket spine, with adjacent tears of up to 1 1/8", chips and diagonal creases; closed tears along the folds referenced above; 1 3/4" closed vertical tear to the left of center of the front panel; two 3/4" close vertical tears along the upper edge of back panel; rubs on fore-edge corners and a 1 1/4" closed vertical tear along the fold at the lower right fore-edge corner. First edition, inscribed, of this fascinating memoir of Mary and Fred Bedell's trek across the perimeter of the United States in 1922 following World War I in their Hupmobile, over some of the worst driving conditions imaginable, including impassable roads, holdup bandits in Texarkana, tornadoes through Texas, while featuring camping stops at Yosemite, Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Banff, and more. Political and racial upheaval make infrequent appearances as she often refers to the plight of African-Americans, or Native Americans, but she and her husband were particularly appalled at the prevalence of the Ku Klux Klan across the South and into Arizona "taking the law into its own hands and wearing masks to prevent detection. Could anything be more cowardly or more at variance with our constitution." Bedell (1870-1936) was an active photographer, while her husband Frederick Bedell (1861-1958) was a noted physicist at Cornell, specialist in alternating currents, audiologist specialist, and later professor at Caltech.
