The great Jan van Beers 1852-1927 - the hero of almost as many stories as the distinguished Mr. Whistler, - is much the most prominent artist in the Belgian section. The number of his works, their aggressive quality and the cleverness with which they are executed, produce a striking effect on the visitors. Many of these pictures and generally the best of them, as the portraits of Henri Rochefort and the composer, Peter Benoit and the "Summer Evening," are old and have been many times exhibited before. In the latter, which - like all others - comes from the collection of Mr. Yerkes of Chicago, may be found the best results obtainable from the painter's peculiar qualities, - his malice, his ingenuity, his close observation and his pessimism. As a bilious little painted satire nothing better has been done than this, - the handsome, park-like enclosure shutting out the world, the richly-dressed, dissatisfied mondain kicking her pink-slippered feet, the decorous waiting carriage and attendants and the cheerful rococo statue fluting away so peacefully though he has lost his unnecessary head.

Hotel Bristol, Burlington Gardens, 9 & 19 July 1890. Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers (1852 1927), Belgian painter and illustrator, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. They are sometimes referred to as Jan van Beers the elder and Jan van Beers the younger. In 1884, Jan Van Beers produced the pen-and-ink sketches for the edition de luxe of his father's poetry. he became the leader of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (18521908), Alexander Struys (18521941), and Jef Lambeaux (18521908). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behaviour, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes.

A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Jan Van Beers, Belgian Painter, 1852-1927, with the caption "The modern Wiertz". He is sometimes referred to as "the younger", to distinguish him from his father - the poet Jan van Beers (1821-1888).

Jacob or in French Jacques van Maerlant (c. 1230-40 - c. 1288-1300) was a Flemish poet of the 13th century and one of the most important Middle Dutch authors during the Middle Ages.

De bundel is opgedragen aan zijn echtgenote Hendrika Mertens. Het is de eerste dichtbundel van Van Beers (eerste druk 1853) en hij had er met name in Nederland een onwaarschijnlijk succes mee.
