1st edition. "Like the "twa corbies" of the old ballad, Alexander and John McGregor dwelt together in the little town of Kilbracken, whence they planned the lives of all their relatives. They were respected members of the kirk in their sanctimonious Victorian society, but the power with which they controlled the lives of others had far-reaching effects which were certainly not what the brothers had expected and were not always good". Book Resume: "The Prize novel in the Hodder and Stoughton - Frederick A Stokes Company competition" Winner of the $20,000 International Prize Novel Competition and thereby assured a big press, wide publicity, good advertising A first novel -- the author a girl of twenty eight, niece of Ian Eay -- but it shows the result of rigid self-discipline in its assured touch and utter lack of any of the earmarks of inexperience A profoundly moving story of the Scotch Highlands and of the interplay of three characters, -- Alison, sensitive, immature, lovely wife of a fanatical parson, preaching hell fire and damnation to a dour, reluctant flock, and practising his creed of fear in his own home, and Andrew Simon, the itinerant painter, fleeing the boredom of city life and finding hope of fulfilment in his love for Alison The plot is slight -- the power of the story is in the restraint of the telling, in the simplicity and sympathy of handling A fine piece of work, which will be appreciated by readers seeking quality, but is not likely to have much appeal for the readers who demand incident and escape literature Extensive promotion and advertising. PLEASE ASK for additional photographs if required. HENDERSON Keith (illustratore). Signed by author.…
