Assurta ad un ruolo para-scientifico e addirittura adibita a distinzioni e classificazioni antropologiche, in tempi più recenti essa è stata intesa soprattutto come sede di accertamenti a livello della dimensione socio-psicologica (storia delle passioni, genesi e formazione dell'immaginario collettivo). 11 Settecento e l'Ottocento sono stati i secoli d'oro della fisiognomica, anche per l'aumentata diffusione delle opere illustrate e per l'intenso impegno intorno a questo tema di personaggi eclettici come Le Brun e Lavater, come di naturalisti quali Buffon e Camper, che hanno spianato la strada a Darwin nel confronto tra caratteristiche morfologiche umane e ammali. La letteratura europea dell'età classico-romantica è talmente pregna del paradigma n'siognomico, che l'impresa di riunire studiosi di varia esperienza intorno a questo tema, ha dato frutti ancora nuovi, nonostante le ricche pubblicazioni dell'ultimo decennio. Il principio dialettico che sta alla base della questione fisiognomica, nella tensione tra il bello del classicismo e il deforme e mostruoso dell'età romantica, consente appassionanti escursioni nel campo della letteratura, della filosofia e della scienza, dove la sfida del confronto tra "evidenze" e "ambiguità" si riassume nel volto della Monna Lisa che sollecita risposte all'enigma del silenzio.
