Der gemeinsame Fokus aller Beitraege ist die Rolle einer Dichotomie von Zentrum/Kerngebiet und Peripherie/Grenzen in einem repraesentierten, vorgestellten Raum. Diese Fokussierung erleichtert es, transkulturelle AEhnlichkeiten und Ansaetze historischen Vergleichens auszumachen.Centre and periphery, two notions essential in the discourse of power and domination, tend to be reificated as a static, inert relation of an active, dominating centre on one side with an acquiescent, docile periphery on the other. Far before a spatial turn came into vogue, philosophers like Immanuel Kant or sociologists such as Georg Simmel pointed out that space is not an entity existing besides human perceptiveness respectively without any relation to society. In this book specialists in the history of various premodern societies are discussing manifold kinds of spatial differentiations and within that the role of a seemingly ubiquitous dichotomy between centre/core and periphery/frontier. The researches cover a vast region spanning from Central Europe in the West to Japan in the Farthest East and Egypt in the South. Jahrhundert u.Z. auf städtische Gesellschaften der mediterranen Welt mit einem in fast allen Belangen abweichenden Wirtschafts- und Wertesystem trafen und intensive Akkulturationsprozesse in stattfanden. Ziel dieses Projekts war es, dieses abwechslungs- und spannungsreiche Aufeinandertreffen verschiedener Gruppen an einem ausgewählten Platz zu studieren, ein Datierungsgerüst zu erarbeiten und die Ergebnisse mit der kulturgeschichtlichen Gesamtentwicklung in der Schwarzmeerregion und den eurasischen Steppengebieten zu vergleichen. Die Gräberfelder gehören zu den sechs bisher bekannt gewordenen spätantiken bis frühmittelalterlichen Nekropolen rund um den Tafelberg Mangup in der südwestlichen Bergkrim. Sie wurden z.T. zur gleichen Zeit genutzt und lassen sich zu den Siedlungs- und Befestigungsphasen auf dem Plateau in Bezug setzen. Seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre konnten im Rahmen von Rettungsgrabungen bisher nur Teilflächen der Bestattungsplätze untersucht werden, trotzdem sind anhand des geborgenen Fundmaterials erste Aussagen zum Nutzungszeitraum möglich.
