Ibn Zerah estudió en Tudela y Alcalá de Henares, donde en 1361 llegó a rabino y profesor de la Torah, aunque en medio de las turbulencias de la guerra civil castellana. Empobrecido a causa de esta guerra, el financiero, contador y tesorero de la corte, Samuel Abravanel, intercedió por él y consiguió que le nombrasen rabino y cabeza de la academia de la Torah en Toledo. A él dedicó en agradecimiento Ibn Zerah su libro. Dividido en cinco partes o artículos, redactadas de un modo llano para que pudieran entenderse sin disquisiciones, el primero de los artículos de esta Provisión para el camino está dedicado al estudio de las oraciones y de todo lo relacionado con ellas (en realidad, una redacción de cómo es el mundo, cuál es su orden, y las plegarias de agradecimiento por que así sea); el segundo, a las normas referidas a(l uso de) los productos derivados de animales y (de) los alimentos prohibidos (en realidad, una estupenda demostración de cómo el código religioso reducía a norma divina las necesidades higiénicas y sanitarias); el tercero, a la regulación del matrimonio (y del divorcio, del concubinato y de la poligamia); el cuarto, al Sabbat y a las festividades; y, el quinto, al tiempo de ayuno y al de duelo, siempre presentes las variaciones y límites para cumplir con la norma, pero poder hacerlo en la situación de estar entre cristianos. Al final hay un suplemento con un tratado sobre el Mesías y la resurrección de los muertos, necesario sin duda, debido a que una de las diferencias entre cristianos y judios radicaba en sí el Mesías había llegado ya (para los cristianos, sí) o no (para los judios, no). Siendo un código normativo, que es peculiar por ser de orientación práctica dirigida a los judios mejor establecidos que se relacionaban con las comunidades no judías, la relevancia que siempre se le ha concedido estriba, por un lado, en que ejemplifica las costumbres en vigor en el s. XIV en las comunidades judias con los matices a esas normas cuando entraba en juego esa relación con la población no judía. Por otro lado, la fama de esta obra procede de que en la introducción, apartándose de la costumbre de que el autor la empleara para presentar el propósito de su obra sin concederse opiniones personales, Ibn Zerah incluyó en la suya una breve historia de su desgracia familiar ?gracias a la cual se conocen sus circunstancias? y un encendido agradecimiento al cristiano amigo de su padre que le recogió de entre los cadáveres y le llevó a su casa donde le cuidó hasta sanar, y a sus maestros y protectores rabínicos en Toledo, J.
