Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This will be a one-of-a-kind item. I purchased the book some years ago from the library of the late Dr. Stanley W. Bromley of Stamford, Connecticut, a well-regarded entomologist. He penciled his initials on the first page of the first monograph. Dr. Bromley was a past president of the New York Entomological Society. He published his first paper 'Asilids and their prey' at the age of 13. The Asildae upon which he was an authority occupied a part of Dr. Bromley's attention for the remainder of his life, his last paper being a description of 32 new species. Dr. Bromley's library contained a number of books that he'd had bound. That's the case here. As you can see from the spine, the common subject is 'New Diptera'. The time range for the various papers or monographs is 1921 to 1945. And all are the work of Dr. Joseph Charles Bequaert. 'Dr. Bequaert was a Belgian botanist, entomologist and a marine and freshwater malacologist. He was a researcher at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and between 1929 and 1956 he was Curator of insects at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard. He published over 250 scientific papers.' This book does not contain 250 papers, but it does contain quite a good number (Dr. Bromley did not create a table of contents). My estimate is that there are at least 20. There are four consecutive papers on Hippoboscidae. The last titled 'The Hippoboscidae of Oceania (Diptera)' runs 45 pages. I would estimate that the book has around 300 pages. Each of the papers are reprinted from various scientific publications during the time frame referenced. The book contains some interesting drawings (some quite amusing) and photographs. As you can see from the photos, the black covers present quite well. They're very clean, but in direct light you can see a little bit of speckling (for lack of a better word) of the black. The edges and corners look terrific. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The spine ends are in excellent shape. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and very tight covers. This binding was a serious and professional undertaking. The inside covers and end papers are very nice-looking and a little unusual. I think they were created to give the impression of the pattern of wood. They are also very clean. The pages are in very solid shape. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing. Actually, I just saw one light top corner crease. Some of the top corners have a very vague hint of a crease, perhaps there was a light bump. In the main, the pages are clean. The great majority of them have no soiling at all. A very occasional one, over the latter pages, has a bit of margin soiling. And I saw a very few with some spotting. Overall, a clean book. Dr. Bromley penciled a number in the top right-hand corner of typically the title page or first page of a paper. The numbers begin at 1 and go up to 36. So maybe there are more than 20 papers. Occasionally I noticed another tiny pencil number at the top of a page. There's a small stamp at the top corner of the first page of one of the papers. It states 'Bartlett Research Laboratories, Stamford, Connecticut.' That's where Dr. Bromley worked. His home was also in Stamford. I didn't see any other markings or stamps. And I believe these small penciled numbers are the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. I didn't see any other writing. And that is the condition story.

This book delves into the distinctive millipede fauna of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, shedding light on their diversity and evolution. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of millipede collections gathered during expeditions in 1938, meticulously describing 34 species, 28 of which are identified as new to science. These discoveries significantly expand the known diversity of millipedes in the region. The book provides valuable insights into the complex relationships and adaptations of these fascinating creatures, enhancing our understanding of their role within the Caribbean ecosystem. Through detailed morphological examinations and taxonomic revisions, this book offers a significant contribution to the study of millipedes, especially those inhabiting the islands of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
