The book quickly became a standard work in the emerging field of studies on totalitarianism. First published in English in 1951, Arendt herself rewrote it for the German version published in 1955. In 1958, Arendt replaced the 'Concluding Remarks' in a revised English edition with a new chapter on 'Ideology and Terror' and added an epilogue on the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.Volume 5 of the Critical Edition presents the final versions of the book with a scholarly apparatus and detailed annotations, including unknown earlier drafts of Arendt's texts, as well as a comprehensive collection of essays, reviews, lectures, exposés, and typescripts from Arendt's archives.
