La profession de bibliothécaire est associée à certaines valeurs comme la préservation de l'héritage culturel de l'humanité, l'accès équitable au savoir, la liberté intellectuelle, la protection du droit à la vie privée des utilisateurs de la bibliothèque et la confidentialité, la protection du droit de propriété intellectuelle, la neutralité professionnelle, la tolérance, etc. Les bibliothèques, sous leur forme actuelle au Sénégal comme sur le reste du continent africain, constituent un legs colonial. Les valeurs de la bibliothéconomie ont été élaborées dans un contexte occidental. Il peut donc arriver que le système de valeurs de cette profession entre en conflit avec le système de valeurs culturelles des bibliothécaires sénégalais. Toutefois, on ne sait presque rien sur la manière dont les deux systèmes de valeurs sont accommodés par les professionnels sénégalais.
