Domenico Maria Manni (Firenze, 1690-1788) aveva iniziato ad aiutare il padre nella tipografia di famiglia, che pubblicò tra l'altro la quarta edizione del Vocabolario della Crusca, e divenne a sua volta stampatore senza tralasciare una feconda attività letteraria che lo portò a scrivere numerose opere erudite e filologiche. Volto agli studi di storia locale e alla ricerca del purismo linguistico, fu anche direttore della Biblioteca Strozzi e Accademico della Crusca.
