The author demonstrates how the sutures of the skull are not preformed but instead develop in response to the direction of blood vessels. The formation of different suture shapes is dir…ectly tied to the incidence of Haversian canals and their vessels on the suture. Furthermore, rather than sutures driving skull growth, the author posits that both are reactions to an underlying cause. Through ligature of the carotid arteries, the author induces localized necrosis of skull bone. He demonstrates that the skull then compensates for the weakened area by increasing growth in perpendicular directions as well as through the phenomenon of secondary narrowing. These experiments and observations challenge prevailing theories of skull growth and provide new insights into the complex processes that shape the skull. II, pp.880-881 "Es handelt sich hier um schon in Werneck über lange Jahre durchgeführte, wohlbedachte, aber nicht ganz abgeschlossene Experimentalreihen am Kaninchen, die entgegen damals geltenden Meinungen tatsächlich beweisen, daß wechselseitig der Schädel die Hirnform und das Gehirn die Schädelform beeinflußt. Gehirn und Schädel sind von Anfang an aufeinander gerichtet, wachsen mit und durch einander, tragen aber die Grundbedingungen ihrer Gestaltung in sich selbst, eine besonnene Schlußfolgerung, die heute noch gilt. Dies alles wurde durch Exstirpationsversuche bewiesen, die am neugeborenen Tier vorgenommen waren. Im Laufe dieser Versuche hatte Gudden bemerkt, daß am Gehirn des erwachsenen Kaninchens, durch Entfernung eines Auges nach der Geburt, der kontralaterale vordere Zweihügel in der Entwicklung zurückgeblieben war, wie unmittelbar der Vergleich mit der Normalseite ergab. Damit war die Guddensche Exstirpationsmethode gefunden, die gestattet, mit dem operativ entfernten Hirnteil zusammenhängende Leitungsbahnen und Gewebeabschnitte jeweils festzustellen. Dies ermöglichte erstmals in der Geschichte der Hirnforschung ganz neue Einblicke in die einzelnen anatomischen Systeme innerhalb des Hirnes und ergab eine Fülle von Erkenntnissen über Verlauf, Ursprung und Ende von Leitungsbahnen, wie sie die gewöhnliche anatomische Betrachtung nie vermitteln kann." - Kolle, Große Nervenärzte I, 132 First edition.
