Dieses Buch bietet eine umfassende Gesamtgeschichte der KZ-Gedenkstätte Mauthausen und zeichnet die Entwicklung des ehemaligen Lagers nach: von der Befreiung durch US-Truppen 1945 über die sowjetische Verwaltung und die Übergabe an die Republik bis zur Einrichtung einer Gedenkstätte. Die Marginalisierung im Kalten Krieg wird ebenso thematisiert wie die Nutzung als Ort der politischen Bildung seit den 1960er Jahren und der Aufstieg zu einem zentralen Ort nationalen Gedenkens. Es werden Erinnerungsstrategien analysiert, die in der Gedenkstättenarchitektur, Ikonographie und den sozialen Praktiken des Gedenkens sichtbar werden, von den ersten Gedenkfeiern nach der Befreiung bis hin zur Eventkultur, wie dem Philharmonikerkonzert im Jahr 2000. Die Transformation eines der großen nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager in eine Gedenkstätte wird nicht als Erfolgsgeschichte, sondern als eine Geschichte mit gescheiterten und vergessenen Konzepten dargestellt.
