The Mutual Broadcasting System (commonly referred to simply as Mutual; sometimes referred to as MBS, Mutual Radio or the Mutual Radio Network) was an American commercial radio network in operation from 1934 to 1999. In the golden age of U.S. radio drama, Mutual was best known as the original network home of The Lone Ranger and The Adventures of Superman and as the long-time radio residence of The Shadow (Orson Welles). Illustrated by Rea Irvin (August 26, 1881 - May 28, 1972) was an American graphic artist. Although never formally credited as such, he served de facto as the first art editor of The New Yorker. He created the Eustace Tilley cover portrait and the New Yorker typeface].

The network was organised on September 29, 1934, with the members contracting for telephone-line transmission facilities and agreeing to collectively enter into contracts with advertisers for their networked shows. WOR and WGN, based in the two largest markets and providing the bulk of the programming, were the acknowledged leaders of the group. On October 29, 1934, Mutual Broadcasting System, Inc. was incorporated, with Bamberger and WGN Inc. each holding 50% of the stock-five each of the ten total shares. Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint Pierre 1737-1814, after spending four years in Russia as an engineer, obtained a commission as engineer for the Isle of France. He remained there for three years, and then returned to Paris to devote himself to literature. In addition to his 'Voyage to the Isle of France' he wrote the famous 'Paul and Virginia' a work hailed as a chef d'oeuvre by the French critics and which was translated into most European languages including English. He was intimate with Rousseau, and enjoyed the patronage of Louis XVI, Joseph Bonaparte, and Napoleon.
