Theodore Beza (June 24, 1519 October 13, 1605) was a French Calvinist Protestant theologian, reformer and scholar who played an important role in the Protestant Reformation. He was a disciple of John Calvin and lived most of his life in Geneva. Beza succeeded Calvin as a spiritual leader of the Republic of Geneva, which was originally founded by John Calvin himself. In 1565 he issued an edition of the Greek New Testament, accompanied in parallel columns by the text of the Vulgate and a translation of his own (already published as early as 1556). The Latin text was an early publication in England of Thomas Vautroullier (died 1587) a French Huguenot who emigrated to London from Paris or Rouen about the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I (1558), and was granted letters of denization on 9 March 1562. He was admitted a brother of the Stationers' Company on 2 October 1564, and established a press in Blackfriars in 1570. On 19 June 1574, a licence was granted to him, which permitted him to print Beza s New Testament both in the parallel and Latin versions that same year.
