The project was begun under the direction of French scholar and member of the Académie Française, the abbé Jean-Paul Bignon [1662-1743], who was appointed Royal Librarian in 1718. The catalogue of manuscripts, of which only the Oriental and Classical sections were completed, was edited by Anicet Melot [1697-1759], antiquary and custodian of manuscripts at the library, with the assistance in Volume I of orientalist Étienne Fourmont [1683-1745]. French ecclesiastic and philologist, Claude Sallier [1685-1761], professor of Hebrew at the Collège Royale and custodian of books at the Bibliothèque Royale, edited the catalogue of printed books with scholar and historian, Pierre Jean Boudot [1689-1771] and Anicet Melot (Melot was responsible for the section on jurisprudence).
