März 1882 in Lauffen a.N. geboren als Tochter der Eheleute Christoph Bidlingmaier und dessen Frau Maria geborene Wöhr. Der Vater stammte aus Degenfeld und war der Sohn eines Schäfers. Er wurde 1867 vierter Schulmeister in Lauffen, 1892 schließlich erster Schulmeister und Oberlehrer. Als Rektor der Volksschule war er im Dienst bis ins 78. Lebensjahr. Noch als Achtzigjähriger durchschwamm er den Neckar, und neben dem Schuldienst bewirtschaftete er Weinberge in besten Lagen. In der Familie wurde auch die Musik gepflegt, zwei Klaviere standen für die insgesamt achtköpfige Familie bereit. Maria hatte noch 5 Geschwister, 3 Schwestern und 2 Brüder. In Lauffen besuchte Maria die Volksschule. Nach den vorliegenden Unterlagen hat Maria Bidlingmaier nach ihrer Tätigkeit in Nordheim in Heilbronn die Oberrealschule besucht und dort 1910 die Reifeprüfung (Abitur) abgelegt. Danach studierte sie an der Fakultät für Staatswissenschaften, heute würde das etwa der Fakultät für Sozial- und Verhaltenswissenschaften entsprechen. Zunächst studierte sie 2 Semester in München, danach 5 Semester in Freiburg und schließlich 1 Semester in Tübingen. Maria Bidlingmaier war die erste Frau, die bei dem renommierten Professor Fuchs in Tübingen zu einem Frauenthema promovierte. Ihr Thema lautete: Die Bäuerin in zwei Gemeinden Württembergs. Bei den Gemeinden handelt es sich um eine Gemeinde mit Industrie, mit Verkehr und in der Nähe einer größeren Stadt, und einer solchen ohne Industrie, ohne Verkehr und ohne die Nähe einer größeren Stadt. Mit der ersten Gemeinde ist Lauffen, mit der zweiten Kleinaspach gemeint.In ihrer Arbeit beschreibt Bidlingmaier sowohl die wirtschaftliche als auch die private Situation der Bauersfrauen. Es geht um Ackerbau, Weinbau, Vieh- und Milchwirtschaft usw., aber auch um die Ernährung der Familie, um Wohnung, Kleidung, Kinder, Ehe und vieles mehr. Sie erfasste viele Zahlen, erstellte Statistiken, machte Tabellen und Vergleiche und trug insgesamt eine große Fülle von Stoff zusammen. Am 24.7.1915 beantragte sie die Zulassung zur Doktorpromotion und bestand am 5. August die Prüfung mit magna cum laude (= gut). Ob in Nordheim jemand mitbekommen hat, dass das Fräulein Bidlingmaier sich ab 1915 nun Dr. Bidlingmaier nennen durfte, ist nicht überliefert. Die Doktorarbeit von Maria Bidlingmaier erschien in gedruckter Form erstmals im Jahr 1918. Gewidmet hat sie diese Arbeit ihrem im September 1914 in Frankreich gefallenen Bruder Friedrich. Dieser war promovierter Geophysiker und Südpolarforscher, er lehrte seit 1912 an der Universität in München. Die Verfasserin hat das Erscheinen ihres Werkes selbst nicht mehr erlebt. Sie starb am 22. Januar 1917 an einer schweren Lungenentzündung im Alter von nur 34 Jahren im Stuttgarter Olgakrankenhaus, wo sie bis zu ihrem Tod von ihrer Schwester Hanna, die dort Assistenzärztin war, betreut wurde. Das Buch ist auch heute noch lesenswert. Es beschreibt sehr eindrücklich die Rolle der Frau, hier besonders die Situation und das Leben der Bauersfrau. Zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten diente die Studie von Bidlingmaier als Vorbild hinsichtlich ihres Ansatzes und ihrer methodischen Vorgehensweise. Das Buch erschien 1990 in einem Nachdruck im Jürgen Schweier Verlag in einer Auflage von zunächst 1000 Exemplaren, eine weitere Auflage ist inzwischen erfolgt. Dass eine so außergewöhnliche Frau wie Maria Bidlingmaier in Nordheim etwa 5 Jahre als erste Lehrerin gewirkt hat, war hier bisher nicht bekannt. Als erste weibliche Lehrperson in Nordheim galt fälschlicherweise bisher Maria Dannecker aus Löchgau, die im April 1906 auf Maria Bidlingmaier folgte. Welche Spuren Fräulein Lehrerin Bidlingmaier bei den Nordheimer Schulkindern hinterlassen hat, lässt sich heute leider nicht mehr feststellen, da es keine Zeitzeugen mehr gibt, die zwischen 1901 und 1906 zur Schule gingen.
