Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. In this book 23 scholars from Ukraine, France, Great Britain, Russia, and Denmark celebrate the 70th birthday of the archaeologist, A.N. Sceglov, who is one of the senior professors at the St Petersburg State University. Sceglov is a pioneer in the investigation and histroy of ancient Crimea, as well as a widely recognized authority in the study of northern Black Sea antiquities. The Tarchankut expedition established by Sceglov in 1959 explored a number of sites in the remote chora of Tauric Chersonesos. Panskoe I ranks among the most prominent of them, and Sceglov has devoted more than 30 years of his life to this unique and exceptionally well-preserved Greek settlement. The contributions to this publication shed new light on a vast range of Black Sea issues: from the earliest settlements and their functions to the formation of a Russian science of classical antiquities. In focus are the important Greek cities Histira, Olbia, Chersonesos, and Herakleia Pontike, their material culture and relationship to their own rural territory and to their non-Greek neighbours.Until now most research in this area has been conducted solely by Russians and published in Russian, but now the rest of the world can get a glimpse of the Black Sea area during antiquity. Contains contributions that shed light on a range of Black Sea issues: from the earliest settlements and their functions to the formation of a Russian science of classical antiquities. This work focuses on the important Greek cities, their material culture and relationship to their own rural territory and to their non-Greek neighbours. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Meetings of cultures arouse strong feelings. In this volume, nineteen scholars from Denmark, France, Georgia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Russia, and Ukraine present a profound discussion covering various topics from the physical arena of the colonial encounters, to the layout of land and protection of cities, to the dynamics of the cultural exchange, to the perception of how it was to be Greek in the Pontic realm, and finally, to be reciprocal strategies exerted by the Greeks and Scythians in the Olbia as described in Herodotos's Skythian Tale. Through the many-sided contributions it is revealed how the self and the other are two sides of the same coin - yeasterday, today, and tomorrow. Nineteen experts from Europe and beyond analyze diverse cultural encounters and territorial shifts. Their essays examine colonial conflicts, urban planning, and identity, illuminating Greek life in the Pontic realm and reciprocal strategies between Greeks and Scythians in Olbia. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The late Hellenistic period, spanning the 2nd and early 1st centuries BC, was a time of great tumult and violence thanks to nearly incessant warfare. At the same time the period saw the greatest expansion of 'Hellenistic' Greek culture, including ceramics. Papers in this volume explore problems of ceramic chronology (often based on evidence dependent on the violent nature of the period), survey trends in both production and consumption of Hellenistic ceramics particularly in Asia Minor and the Pontic region, and assess the impact of Hellenistic ceramic culture across much of the eastern Mediterranean and into the Black Sea.
