Es soll sichtend und klärend wirken, wenn die oft übergroße Fülle von Einzelwahrnehmungen den ungeübten Beobachter verwirrt und ihn unfähig macht, das unwesentliche Beiwerk von den hauptsächlichen und ausschlaggebenden Krankheitserscheinungen zu trennen. Gilt doch für die Psychiatrie ganz besonders die Erfahrung, daß erst nach Überwindung dieser Schwierigkeiten der Symptomatologie eine fruchtbringende, die Ursachenlehre und die Verlaufsrichtungen der Geistesstörungen in gleicher Weise berücksichtigende Diagnostik dem Lernenden möglich wird. Dieses Lehrbuch soll den klinischen Unterricht ergänzen, ihn keineswegs ersetzen. Wir hoffen, daß es auch den weiteren Zweck erfüllt, dem praktischen Arzte das früher Gelernte wieder aufzufrischen und ihn in den Stand zu setzen, dieses am Krankenbette nutzbringend zu verwerten. Dem Plane des Buches entsprechend sind alle wissenschaftlichen Kontroversen streng vermieden, und nur der einigermaßen gesicherte Bestand unseres Lehrgebietes ist zur Darstellung gebracht worden.
