As a young man traveling the country by motorcycle he stopped for the evening in the desert and found a fossil skull of an extinct salamander like creature. This so excited his imagination that he made up his mind to become a fossil hunter. He sent the partial skull to his father who brought it to the attention of the renowned dinosaur hunter Barnum Brown. Brown recognized it as an as yet unknown species and asked where the rest of the skull was. Bird returned to the site many months later and found the rest of the skull. This led to Bird meeting and eventually coming to work for Brown at the American Museum of Natural History. Over the years Bird took part in many important digs, most notably the discovery and excavation of the Dinosaur Trackway in the Paluxy River in Texas. The first known Sauropod trackway. This book is Bird's accounting of his adventures, and "adventures" is the correct word. The book is very readable, even hard to set aside. It conveys the adventure, excitement and fun of scientific discovery as well as any book I have read. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall First Edition Thus [1984]; unstated; First Printing.…
