Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Very Good. Frank Lloyd Wright's residential architecture in and around Oak Park, Illinois, in the early part of this century constitutes some of the architect's most recognizable and distinctive work. From the Oak Park Home and Studio itself, where Wright lived and practiced during this time, to the signature Robie House in Chicago, the extraordinary work from Wright's Prairie period embodies the intense creativity of his early career. Taking his cue from the vast, virgin grasslands that surrounded the Chicago area, Wright produced homes that reflect the land upon which they were built - with unbroken roof planes, sheltering eaves, and dramatic, sweeping lines. This volume offers a succinct, site-by-site showcase of Wright's first major contribution to American design: the Prairie House. Among the homes selected are the Frederick C. Robie House, the Mrs. Thomas Gale House, the William H. Winslow House, and the Dana-Thomas House. Exceptional color photography of Wright's finely wrought interiors - including his own drafting room at the Home and Studio - as well as bold exterior perspectives offer readers an inspiring view of Wright's unique architectural mission. With an informative introduction, excerpts from Wright's own writings, and rarely seen archival photographs, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie is a must for all those interested in Wright's work and this definitive period in American architecture. Taking his cue from the vast Midwestern grasslands surrounding the Chicago area in the early 1900s, Wright produced his celebrated and distinctive Prairie Houses, noted for their unbroken roof planes, sheltering eaves, and dramatic, sweeping lines. This book showcases a stunning selection of these homes, and offers illuminating commentaries about the work. 50 illustrations.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword by Omar Khan. 1. Introduction. 2. Photo Peshawar: the catalogue. Photo Peshawar delves into the largely unexplored culture of photography in the Pakistani frontier city of Peshawar from the 1940s to the present day. Photography in Peshawar has historically and culturally found itself caught between the creative and conservative forces of both India and Afghanistan. Variously borne of British rule, the Partition of India, war in neighbouring Afghanistan, the rise of the Taliban, local tribal law, a historical prohibition on image-making in Islam, the practice of purdah (the veiling of females in public), and the regional movie industry, there is a tangible stress between the practice of photography as it is pursued and the culture in which it is lived. With nearly hundred and fifty photographs, each more stunning than the earlier, 'photography as craft is what this splendid volume examines-photography at the living, bleeding intersection of culture, war, frontier and fantasy, the sheer human inventiveness that results from a magnificent and tragic brew of technology and history.'.…

Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. The format is approximately 11 inches by 8.5 inches. 128 pages. Notes. Further Reading. The Contributors. Index. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Covers have short flaps. Illustrated front and back covers. Illustrations (mostly black and white). This was prepared by the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation of Oak Park, Illinois. The sparks that ignited Frank Lloyd Wright's ideas came form various sources, among them the art and culture of Japan. On his first trip abroad in 1905, Wright went to Japan and while there took many photographs. Through fifty of these pictures -- published together here for the first time -- we can understand how the buildings, scenery, and heritage of Japan became the foundation for many of Wright's masterpieces. Includes essays by Wright experts from the United States and Japan. This book is filled with rare images showing Frank Lloyd Wright the photographer as well as Wright the tourist, the architect, and the collector. Melanie Birk was the Foundation's Publications Director. The content include Wright and the Glimmer of Japan by Anthony Alofsin; Wright the Tourist by Masami Tanigawa, The Wrights' 1905 Itinerary by Masami Tanigawa; Wright's 1905 Photo Album of Japan, Description of Pictured Sites by Masami Tanigawa; Wright the Photographer by Jack Quinan; Wright the Architect by Kevin Nute; Wright the Collector by Margaret Klinkow; Japanese Objects from the Wrights' Oak Park Collection. Melanie Birk is an author specializing in the subjects of architecture and historic preservation. She wrote the book, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie, which showcases Wright's first major contribution to American design: the Prairie House. As publications director at the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust for nearly 10 years, she served as editor for many titles, including Frank Lloyd Wright's Fifty Views of Japan. This book assembled for the first time the photographs Wright took during his seminal trip to Japan, reproductions of his extraordinary Japanese print collection, and scholarly essays interpreting the influence of Japanese art and culture on his work. Melanie Birk holds a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Her career includes posts as a freelance writer and at other non-profit groups, including the Main Street Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Anthony Alofsin (born June 22, 1949) is an architect, artist, art historian, writer, and professor. Educated at Harvard College and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, respectively, a Bachelor Arts (1971) and Master of Architecture (1981). From Columbia University, he obtained a Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology (1987). Alofsin has written books on modern architecture and published numerous essays on architecture, art, and culture that have appeared in a variety of journals and reviews including The Times Literary Supplement, the Burlington Magazine, the New Criterion, and American Art. He was named Roland Gommel Roessner Centennial Professor Emeritus in Architecture in 2020 in recognition of his scholarship and teaching over thirty-three years at the University of Texas at Austin where he founded and directed the Ph.D. program in architectural history. Masami Tanigawa is an architect and the leading researcher on Frank Lloyd Wright in Japan. Jack Quinan is professor of art history at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The author of several books on Frank Lloyd Wright, he is also the founder of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and the curator of Wright's Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, New York. Kevin Nute teaches the history and theory of architecture at the University of Hawai'i, M noa, and is also an emeritus professor of architecture at the University of Oregon. Margaret Klinkow was a partner in consulting firm specializing in creating archives and libraries for schools, not for profit organizations and businesses, as well as a teacher in these subjects.…
