[Bowdlerized in 1891; first thus earlier in 1941] Autobiography, written in 1868 down to the Prior Park episode of 1846-47, was revised in his last year and extended by the editor to 1851. 'The text as revised by the Archbishop and later bowdlerised by Mother Drane was pub- lished by Burns and Oates in 1891 and after fifty years is out of print. To reprint it fromthe original draft has long been the wish of Catholic histor ians. it is welcome for the stiff, old-fashioned style, which so clearly ex pressed the man.'(vii) -- 'Before he died,he paid Newman a last visit & the Cardinal insisted against all canon laws in kneeling for the Archbishop's blessing, saying: 'I have been indoors all my life, whilst you have battled for the Church in the world.' This was true. He then set about'the business of dying' in great style, saying: 'You may think it presumptuous of me to say so, but my mind is completely tranquil.' He could not fail to mark the historical occasion as he murmured: 'The last of the Vicars-Apostolic is passing.' He was indeed the last link with the Penal days,with three centur ies of religious trouble for English Catholics. The prayers for the dying were being recited by anxious Canons as they leaned over him, eager for a last message from their Father. His lips moved and he mentioned as an axiom for their future guidence: 'The devil is a jackass!' It was his last thrust at the enemy of mankind, and with the coming of St. Benedict's day--March 21st, 1889--he passed quite consciously into a vision of his great patron, surrounded by angels. 'Yes, I see them,' he said distinctly. He died with his eyes wide open. The Beyond held no terrors for him.' (xxii-xxiii) Fair spotted and dull orig. blue cloth. Text unmarked.
