A handsome Modern Library issue of one of the great nineteenth-century French novels, originally published as Illusions perdues and considered central to Balzac's monumental La Comédie humaine. The novel follows the ambitious young poet Lucien Chardon as he leaves provincial Angoulême for Paris, confronting literary ambition, journalism, class aspiration, and moral compromise in Restoration-era France. Kathleen Raine's 1951 translation preserves Balzac's sweeping social realism and psychological intensity, making this edition especially appealing for both collectors and readers of European literature. Book condition: Near Fine. Tight, square, and exceptionally clean with sharp corners and bright gilt spine lettering. Beige cloth remains fresh with only minimal signs of shelving. Interior clean and unmarked with crisp pages and no ownership inscriptions observed. Dust jacket condition: Near Fine, unclipped jacket with light rubbing and mild edge wear, including small creases at spine ends and faint surface scratches visible under light. No major tears or chips observed. This edition uses the restored Modern Library design program introduced during the 1990s revival, with acid-free paper, portrait jacket art, and updated typography. Translation originally published in 1951 by John Lehmann Ltd. Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was one of the foundational figures of French realism and among the most influential novelists of the nineteenth century. His vast interconnected series La Comédie humaine sought to portray every layer of French society through recurring characters and intricate social observation. Balzac's work profoundly influenced writers including Flaubert, Dickens, Proust, and Zola, and remains celebrated for its psychological depth, ambitious scope, and penetrating critique of ambition, money, and class. ''Au même titre que Fél…ix Nadar, Édouard Baldus ou Gustave Le Gray, les Frères Bisson ont été les premiers à essayer de se détacher des techniques imposées par l'usage du daguerréotype, notamment en abandonnant la pose photographique au profit de l'instantané. Actifs pendant l'«âge doré» du mécénat photographique, entre 1847 et 1855, les frères Bisson fondent leur originalité sur l'utilisation de très grands tirages (jusqu'à 100 81 cm) et sur la mise en pratique commerciale de leurs techniques. En effet, de 1852 à 1863, la «maison Bisson frères», rue Garancière, compte jusqu'à trente employés et gagne une renommée internationale par l'exécution de commandes très variées.''
