Nach einer Definitio…n und einer allgemeinen Darstellung der unterschiedlichen Funktionen von politischen Mythen und Ritualen wird die Herausbildung der Nationalmythologie in den drei Ländern dargestellt. Dabei wird auch die "ikonische Verdichtung" der Mythen anhand von französischen Beispielen erörtert. Im Hinblick auf die DDR wird gezeigt, wie sich die gleichen politischen Mythen zugleich stabilisierend und destabilisierend auswirken können. Auch in Polen wurden in der Wendezeit zahlreiche Symbole, Mythen und Rituale, die von den großen sozialistischen Bewegungen der Vergangenheit entworfen wurden, neuinterpretiert und gegen das Regime wiederverwendet. Der "Januskopf" der Mythen und Rituale, die sowohl zur Legitimierung als auch zur Destabilisierung von politischen Gemeinwesen beitragen können, ist auch in liberalen Demokratien sichtbar. Sie sind für die Etablierung eines solchen politischen Systems unentbehrlich, bleiben aber auch stets bedrohlich, da sie jederzeit zu maßlosen nationalistischen Ausbrüchen beitragen können. Selbst republikanische Festveranstaltungen können zu Spaltungen in den eigenen Reihen führen, wie am Beispiel der 200 Jahr Feier der Revolution in Frankreich gezeigt wird.
