Aggiungi al carrelloSee Hardie's entry in the Oxford DNB. 11.5 x 9 cm card. Printed with penny stamp in red; no illustration. In fair condition, discoloured and a little worn. Addressed by Hardie to 'C. H. Whitby | 82, Crofton Park | Yeovil.' (Whitby is the author of a handful of books of reglious poetry.) Whitby would appear to be offering for sal…e, or at least asking for advice about, an impression of Palmer's celebrated engraving 'The Bellman'. Hardie begins his reply: 'As long as there is sufficient margin of paper outside the plate-mark, the actual size of the sheet on which a Palmer etching was printed does not matter.' The museum has 'proofs of the Bellman, but not one of the actual issue made by the Fine Art Socy. in 1879'. He cannot see why 'the value of the print' should be affected by the trimming of the paper.

Profusely illustrated with facsimile art by William Blake, the 537 watercolour drawings and 43 engravings reproduced in these volumes constitute Blake's largest pic…torial work. They comprise a page-for-page illustration of all nine Nights of the once famous Night Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality by Edward Young (1683-1765). Transformed by Blake's imagination they shine as an illuminated serial fresco of irony, comedy, and prophecy. Elephantine folio, 44 by 34 cm. viii, [2], 95, [2] pp. 43 of the pages have Blake's expansive, charismatic illustrations surrounding the text. Four of these are section heads, the balance, being border ornamentation, but even the latter are far more than merely decorative. The…distinctive Blake artwork fires the imagination regardless. In fact, the text, which is framed with ruled lines, seems to cover some of the illustration. Last two pages are the Explanation of the Engravings, which are often not present. The full navy blue morocco is fairly heavily rubbed along the edges, a bit less so, by the joints. Some scattered soiling within, but the pages are generally quite clean. There are a few closed tears, not of great length, and one repaired close tear which was somewhat longer. The Explanation of Engravings leaf has two repaired tears. Notwithstanding these flaws, this is an attractive, appealing copy.
