Mass Market Paperback. Condizione: Fine. Robert (Cover Design) Sutter (illustratore). First Thus. This is truly a single source encyclopedic guide to all facts about the ancient world. It is a ready reference to myths and legends, gods and goddesses, leaders and battles, places and dates as well as identifying top mid-20th century scholars and reflecting then known archaeological findings. xxi + 319pp. Sir William Smith (1813-1893) was an English lexicographer. Smith published the first of several school dictionaries in 1850, and in 1853 began the Principia series, which marked an advance in the teaching of Greek and Latin. Then came the Student's Manuals of History and Literature, of which the English literature volume went into 13 editions. Edward Henry Blakeney (1869-1955) was an English educator, classical scholar and poet. As well as several volumes of poetry, he published editions and translations of classical Latin and Greek texts. John Warrington has little or no biographic information available. It appears he provided many translations for the Every Man's Classics Paperback series. Since both Smith and Blakeney were dead long before this book was published in 1958, Warrington and E. P. Dutton editors were responsible to bring this book to completion. Paperback book is remarkably well preserved and has been carefully stored and used. No defined reading creases, interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Copyright 1958. Printed in U.S.A. Promoted as "A Dutton Paperback." No edition or print-run info found. Dutton paperback catalog: D 12. No ISBN nor LCCN. MSR = US $1.45.

The officer's account provides invaluable insights into the history and culture of the Far East during a time of significant change. Through firsthand descriptions of events such as the bombardment of Canton and encounters with pirates and local populations, the author sheds light on the complex political and social landscape of the region. The book delves into the dynamics between British naval forces and Chinese authorities, offering a unique perspective on the Opium Wars and the opening of China to foreign trade. With vivid descriptions of the coastline, its people, and customs, this book serves as both a historical document and a captivating travelogue. The author's keen observations and thoughtful reflections offer valuable insights into a pivotal period in East Asian history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. First edition. 8vo. pp. xx, 353 [bound without pp. 231-4, as usual]; port. frontis., full-page illusts. and illusts. to text, 19 maps and charts inc. many folding; bookplate of Francis Gray Smart, near-fine in the original decorated cloth. An excellent overview of naval and military activities from 1856 to 1862 in the Far East. During the Crimean War a Russian squadron was pursued by a small British contingent, but as a result of the latter's ignorance of the local coastline the Russians were able to make their way to the safety of the Amur river. In 1856 the British sent two survey vessels to the region, and the author was a surveyor on board one of them, H.M.S. Actaeon. The vessels' assistance during the Second Opium War helped to establish British influence in the area, and the survey work extended to the coasts of Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Manchuria. The illustrations include a large extending panorama of Hong Kong, and charts of the Actaeon's tracks during the period.

Aggiungi al carrelloxx, 353 pp. Quarto. Rebound in old blue cloth boards. Gilt lines and lettering on the spine. Spine is sunned. Back board has some shelf wear. Edges trimmed and somewhat dust soiled. Inside, the end papers are rather stained. Booksellers stamps and labels on the back paste down. This book includes 19 maps (17 are folding) and is profusely illustrated with plans, charts, sketches, paintings and photographs. There is occasional staining and foxing throughout the volume. A nice copy of a very interesting title. This book describes the surveying voyage of H. M. S. Actaeon between 1857 and 1862. This book was written by the surveying officer on that voyage, William Blakeney. This volume contains chapters on the Chu Kiang (Canton River), Pratas Reef, Formosa, the Korean Strait and the Sea of Japan, and was based on notes that Blakeney had recorded during the voyage. Published forty years after the events described, it was dedicated by the author to "His Excellency the Marquis Hirobumi ITO, G. C. B., four times Premier of Japan and a friend of England since he first landed on its shores nearly forty years ago." A very reasonably priced copy in a more modern binding. As a note of provenance, Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy was a previous owner of this volume. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. His book plate is on the front free end paper.
