Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Does the universal availability of medical care under the National Health Service promote a healthier population presenting fewer complaints, or does it encourage more patients to seek advice for minor disorders? Is there widespread 'abuse' of medical services, as is sometimes alleged, compounding the apparent shortage of medical manpower? Do changes in the pattern and incidence of diseases, as we move from the era of infectious diseases with well-defined onsets to that of chronic and degenerative disorders with insidious beginnings, make earlier consultation desirable and attention to 'trivial' symptoms essential ? What use is actually made of the health service, by what sort of people, and for what reasons ? The investigation described in this book set out to throw light on these and related questions by means of a study carried out jointly by doctors and social scientists in two London boroughs, Bermondsey and Southwark, served by Guy's Hospital. A new type of computer-linked medical 'branching' questionnaire was devised to elicit information about complaints suffered and measures taken to manage them from a random sample of 2,500 adults, who were interviewed in a house-to-house survey. The findings indicate that only 5 per cent of the sample population felt themselves to be entirely free of complaints; 18-8 per cent suffered from ailments for which they had sought no advice or treatment; and, of the remainder who took action of some kind about their illness, 60 per cent had resorted to self-medication. Fifty per cent of the complaints mentioned by respondents had received no treatment of any kind. The decision to seek medical advice (from general practitioner, hospital, or local-authority clinic) rather than attempting self-medication or letting ill alone, seemed strongly influenced by the nature of the complaint - by the individual's perception of his illness.
