Ethelbert Blatter was a Swiss Jesuit priest and pioneering botanist in British India. Author of five books and over sixty papers on the flora of the Indian subcontinent, he was Principal and Professor of Botany at St Xavier College, Bombay and vice-president of the Bombay Natural History Society. In 1932 he became the first recipient of the Johannes Bruehl Memorial Medal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.

Front hinge beginning to weaken though binding is still firm and fully intact. Pages evenly toned with scattered foxing, most prominent on endpapers, half-title, and around the colour plates. Includes all original plant illustrations; colours remain bright. Previous owner inscriptions present. Reprint of the second edition of the classic botanical work first issued in 1927, containing detailed descriptions and full-page illustrations of notable Indian trees. An essential reference title from the Bombay Natural History Society, increasingly difficult to find outside India.
