Juni 1928 auf Trinidad geboren. Schon in ihrer Heimat entwickelte sie sich vom Kinderstar zur Unterhaltungskünstlerin Nr. 1, verließ dann aber 1948 Trinidad und ging zunächst nach London, um in Europa ihre Karriere fortzusetzen. Anfangs konnte sie jedoch beruflich nicht Fuß fassen, musste sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs über Wasser halten und arbeitete als Verkäuferin in einem Juweliergeschäft. Eines Tages lernte sie dort die Frau des Orchesterleiters Ted Heath kennen, die sie ihrem Mann vorstellte. Dieser war begeistert von der jungen attraktiven Sängerin und engagierte sie. Damit hatte Mona Baptiste den Durchbruch geschafft und fand in der Folgezeit große Beachtung und Anerkennung mit ihren Auftritten. 1949 ging sie mit Stephane Grapelli auf Tournee, kam dann nach Paris, wo sie unter anderem mit Yves Montand auftrat. Bei einem Gastspiel in Belgien wurde sie von dem deutschen Impresario Oskar Liebermann gehört, der sie für eine Reihe von Galaauftritten in Deutschland verpflichtete. 1953 erhielt die Sängerin ihren ersten Plattenvertrag in Deutschland und bereits ein Jahr später war sie in den Musikfilmen "An jedem Finger zehn" und "Tanz in der Sonne" zu sehen und zu hören; 1955 folgten die Filme "Stern von Rio", "Wie werde ich Filmstar?" und "Symphonie in Gold". Mona Baptiste war jedoch mit dem, was man ihr an Rollen und Liedmaterial angeboten wurde, nicht glücklich und konzentrierte sich daher wieder vermehrt auf ihre Karriere als Sängerin. Mitte der 50er Jahre war sie in Deutschland ein vielbeschäftigter und beliebter Unterhaltungsstar und feierte als Solistin, vor allem aber als Partnerin von Bully Buhlan, ihre größten Erfolge; der Titel "Es liegt was in der Luft" wurde 1954 zu einem der beliebtesten Lieder des Gesangs-Duos. Ende der 50er Jahre wurde es stiller um die beliebte Künstlerin und erst 1971 nahm sie wieder Platten für unterschiedlichste Firmen auf. Ernster nahm man ihr Talent und ihre Fähigkeiten in der ehemaligen DDR, wo sie bei Jazz-Galas zu hören war. Mona Baptiste starb am 25 Juni 1993, vier Tage nach ihrem 65. Geburtstag in Krefeld.
