Bloodgood Haviland Cutter, a New York poet, published several collections of poems in the mid-late 1800's, including 'The Long Island Farmer's Poems' (New York, 1886).

On two leaves. The illustrations on both are undamaged, but both leages are aged and worn, with chipping and closed tears to extremities. Fragile. ONE: Steel engraving: 'Photo. by Beniczky. | Engd by R. O'Brien.' Captioned with a facsimile of Cutter's signature, with 'THE LONG ISLAND FARMER POET' beneath it. 30 x 24 cm. On thickish wove paper. Head and shoulders image of a middle-aged Cutter, with goatee beard, smartly dressed with bow tie, waistcoat and jacket. TWO: Two small wood engravings on a 31 x 24 cm leaf of wove paper (thinner stock than Item One). The upper image is uncaptioned, but appears to show Mark Twain writing with a quill pen with his left hand, his right hand to his cheek. The lower image is of a clean-shaven Cutter (younger than Item One), again with a facsimile signature as caption, with words 'THE LONG ISLAND FARMER POET.' Not found on Google Images.

Broadside. 19 x 13 cm. Poem in 29 stanzas, printed in two columns, separated by a rule, signed in type by Bloodgood H. Cutter. Mark Twain wrote this of Cutter "He is 50 years old, and small for his age. He dresses in homespun, and is a simple minded, honest, old-fashioned farmer with a strange proclivity for writing rhymes. He writes them on all possible subjects and gets them printed on slips of paper with his portrait at the head. These he will give to any man that comes along, whether he has anything against him or not." Cutter (1817-1906) was a prolific writer whose works are hard to find today. Small broadside (approx. 8" x 2½"); fine. A poem in 8 quartets thanking the ladies for a photograph album, and requesting cartes-de-visite from them so he "can look on each friend's face." The poet concludes with the notion that other men may also look at the ladies in the album, and that he would be kind enough to introduce them to one another. Quite typical Bloodwood Cutter. A friendship album belonging to a woman from New York State, with full-page printed illustrations and tissue guards, containing c.50 hand-written notes and poems, various insertions including one ms. and two printed docket poems by Bloodgood Cutter, one with his ubiquitous printed portrait (see below); ff. 53, including plates, 4to; contemporary maroon blind floral cloth, with a central gilt vignettes and lettering, gilt edges; all edges sunned and the whole rather scuffed, upper hinge neatly and recently repaired. The notes and poems here are are addressed to Serena Lambertson of Great Neck, NY - and represent her friends and acquaintances over some five years - but the album is of interest principally for five pieces (three in manuscript) by the 'Long-Island Farmer Poet', Bloodgood Haviland Cutter (1817-1906), and one by his wife Emmeline (d. 1881). Cutter was immortalised as the redoubtable Poet Lariat in Mark Twain's Innocents Abroad (1869), after he met the author aboard the steamship Quaker City in 1867. Twain described Cutter: 'He is fifty years old, and small of his age. He dresses in homespun, and is a simple-minded, honest, old-fashioned farmer, with a strange proclivity for writing rhymes. He writes them on all possible subjects, and gets them printed on slips of paper, with his portrait at the head. These he will give to any man that comes along, whether he has anything against him or not [.]' One of these self-published poems appears here, entitled 'People will talk'. Cutter was a born self-publicist who evidently thrived on the Twain connection; in 1886 he published The Long Island Farmer's Poems, which included an autographed picture of Mark Twain and a mention of his identity as the inspiration behind Poet Lariat. The simplicity of Cutter's bucolic self-image and his undoubted eccentricity belied a savvy business sense. Cutter was indeed a farmer, but was also a prosperous landowner with extensive property in Great Neck, NY, and across Manhasset Bay, where he built a large house of some twenty rooms. His residuary estate of nearly half a million dollars was willed to the American Bible Society, and his enormous collection of books, antiques, art, travel mementoes and various other items (including 'as hot a bunch of waistcoats as ever appeared on Broadway') was sold at auction. There are five three manuscript pieces by Cutter in the present album, and one by his wife Emmeline Cutter (Nee Allen, of the wealthy Great Neck Allens), with whom he had eloped in 1840.
