Die Keramikstadt Kellinghusen, 60 km nordwestlich von Hamburg in Holstein gelegen, ist vor allem durch ihre Fayencen bekannt. Zwischen 1764 und 1860 produzierten insgesamt sechs Werkstätten Geschirre und Kleinplastiken mit einem charakteristischen farbenfrohen Dekor. Vor mehr als fünfzig Jahren verfasste Gerhard Wietek die erste und bislang einzige deutsche Monographie über die Kellinghusener Fayencen. Da das Buch seit langem vergriffen ist, lag es nahe, das Thema erneut zu behandeln. Die Grundlage bildeten dabei die Exponate des Museums Kellinghusen, dessen Fayence-Sammlung in den letzten zwanzig Jahren beträchtlich erweitert werden konnte. So stammt auch der überwiegende Teil der in diesem Band abgebildeten Fayencen aus dem Bestand des Museums, ergänzt um mehrere Leihgaben auswärtiger Museen.
