Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First. "Second edition" (but first thus, largely revised). Amsterdam: Lodewijck and Daniel Elzevir, 1658. Folio in 6s (8 3/8" x 13 9/16", 214mm x 344mm). [Full collation available.] With an engraved title page and 530 woodcuts integral with the text. Bound in contemporary calf (re-backed) with a blind roll border and corner ornaments. On the spine, 5 raised bands. Author and title ("PISONIS/ HISTORIA/ NATURALIS") gilt to red sheepskin in the second panel. Date gilt to tail. All edges of the text-block mottled red. Re-backed, with the end-papers renewed. Gently scuffed, with some craquelure to the bottom edge of the rear board, and a crescent of damp at the spine-edge. Tanned generally with scattered foxing. Title-leaf reinserted and strengthened at the fore. Crude repairs to the index leaf (3T6), not affecting the text. Linnaean binomials inked beside numerous botanical woodcuts. Collated complete against Landwehr. Soon after receiving his medical degree from Caen in 1633, Willem Piso (Pies; 1611-1678) was offered a position in the Dutch West India Company (Geoctrooieerde Westindische Compagnie, or GWC) as a physician to the governor of Dutch Brazil, Prince Johann Maurits of Orange-Nassau. Piso left for Brazil alongside the German naturalist and astronomer Georg Marcgraf (Marggraf, Marcgrave; 1610-1644), with whom he authored his first text on the flora and fauna of Brazil, Historia Naturalis Brasiliae (see our first edition). Marcgraf died of a fever during an exploration in Guinea prior to its release, but Piso went forward with their collaboration, publishing the work in 1648. Ten years later, Piso saw the work to press. The text was advertised as a revised and expanded edition of the Historia, but Sabin argues differently, noting that "a number of the woodcuts in this work are reproduced from [Historia, therefore,] this is sometimes said to be a second edition. It is in fact a different work, as a comparison of its contents will prove." Although this volume retained Marcgraf's contributions, Piso's editorial choices -- marked by transcription errors and substantial omissions -- drew criticism, notably from Carolus Linnaeus, who had relied on Historia for his own classification work in the years after its release. The compilation additionally includes the posthumous work of Jacob Bontius (1592-1631), a Dutch physician who served in the Indonesian archipelago. His detailed observations on the dysentery epidemic and the practices of local physicians provided valuable insights into tropical diseases and their treatments. Despite the editorial controversy, De Indiae Utriusque re naturali et medica made a lasting impact by documenting indigenous botanical knowledge holistically. It builds upon one of the earliest surveys of the region and remains a cornerstone of Dutch naturalism. The present volume was lot 112 at Sotheby's "Manuscripts and Music from Medieval to Modern" sale in London (12 December 2023). It previously resided in the library of Clayre and Jay Michael Haft. Jay Haft (1935-2022) was a corporate lawyer, a dedicated philanthropist, and an avid collector. Hunt 280; Landwehr, VOC 828; Sabin 63031. Catalogued by GR Murdock.

Aggiungi al carrello2 works in 1 volume. Very rare work on medicine in the East and West Indies, compiled for the use of naval and tropical surgeons, including ships' doctors on VOC and WIC ships. Dutch physicians Jacobus Bontius (or Jacob de Bondt, 1592-1631) and Willem Piso (or Gulielmus Piso, 1611-1678) are both considered to be the founders of the field of tropical medicine. Bontius worked in the East Indies. His chapters contain the first modern descriptions of cholera, beriberi, tropical dysentery, and yaws. Piso worked in Brazil during the Dutch period (1630-1654). He is known for his research on local medicinal plants, including the jaborandi, and discovered that Brazilian lemons were particularly effective for treating scurvy. The work is very rare. According to WorldCat, it is only present in a few libraries worldwide. We have also not been able to trace any other copies in sales records of the past 100 years. The present work is a Dutch translation of De medica Indorum (1642) by Bontius, the first Dutch work on tropical medicine, and Historia naturalis Brasiliae (1648) by Piso and Georg Markgraf (also known as Georg Marcgrave or Marggraf, 1610-1644), which is also considered to be a pioneering work in the field. As the present work was meant as a practical guide for surgeons, only the most relevant chapters of the Latin editions have been included. This is the first Dutch edition of Piso's work, but the second of Bontius'. Although most reference works do not mention this, the Dutch translation of Bontius' work had already been published in 1673 as Oost-Indische warande. As a result, the present work is the second edition, but it is the first to combine these two pioneering works. The last work in this binding, written by VOC physician Johannes Verbrugge (17th century) is a catalogue of drugs that physicians should carry on their travels to the East and West Indies, and includes a list of diseases that are common on those voyages and their cures. It is a logical addition to the other two works and is rarely found separately. With an ownership inscription on the first flyleaf ("4 d Verwilghen") ("Van den bussche"), and another on the second flyleaf ("Ch. Verwilghen 1829"), probably referring to the Verwilghen family, a notable and noble Belgian family originating from the Waasland region. Further with a small wormhole in the upper margin, (not affecting the text), very slight browning and foxing throughout, and the upper support is slightly loosened for the quires in the second half of the work. Otherwise in good condition.l Krivatsy 1500; Landwehr VOC, 829; Sabin 6341; STCN 102642796 (3 copies, incl. 1 incomplete); USTC 1838762 (4 copies); WorldCat 1154809136 (9 copies); cf. Borba de Moraes II, p. 676 (different ed.); Garrison & Morrison 2263 and 2263.1 (different eds.). Contemporary blind-tooled vellum, sewn on 3 supports laced through the joints, with the title in brown ink on the head of the spine, and sprinkled edges. Ad 1 with an engraved title page, erroneously mentioning the year 1693, a small fleur-de-lis woodcut vignette on the title page, a woodcut decorated initial and a woodcut tail-piece. Ad 2 with a large woodcut vignette on the title page, and three woodcut decorated initials. Pages: [8], 304, [7], [1 blank], 96 pp. With: (2) VERBRUGGE, Johannes. Aggiungi al carrelloFourth(?) edition of a very rare anonymous medical guide with 639 numbered entries, most of them discussing a particular ailment and recommending a medicine and/or other treatment. At the end is an alphabetical index of the ailments. The earliest edition known, Vorstelijck gheschenck, dat is: een medecyn-boeck, Amsterdam, Hendrick Barentsz., 1621, matches the present edition almost word for word, with the same 639 numbered entries. The 1621 edition says it was translated from the German into Dutch and improved for this second edition, but neither an earlier Dutch edition nor a German edition has been located. One must wonder if it was mistakenly associated with Carel Baten's Dutch translation of Christoph Wirsung's 1572 Ein newes artzney buech, which appeared as Medecyn boec, Dordrecht, 1589. Wirsung went through several Dutch editions before and after 1621, its structure and arrangement are completely different, with 9 parts containing about 126 chapters subdivided into hundreds of sections, and we find little relation between the texts of the two works. After 1621 the present work appeared as Vorstelijck gheschenck in 1628 and 1631 (the former also issued as an appendix to an undated edition of Wirsung: called the sixth, but not identical to the sixth edition of 1624). All editions are rare. The Dutch title can be translated as "Princely gift, or: A medicine book". The title suggests that the printed book is the Prince of Orange's gift to the people. The printer's note to reader in 1621 says that "treffelijcke ende hoochgheleerde mannen" (respected professors) provided these recipes for the noble houses of the Princes of Nassau. With the corner of one leaf burnt off, affecting a few words of text, and ink marks or dirt on an occasional leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. The binding is rather dirty, with a small chip at the head of the spine and the sewing somewhat loose. A rare and detailed practical medical handbook, especially interesting as a window into medical practices in the household of the Dutch Princes of Orange.l BMN I, p. 377; Krivatsy 12484; KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); Picarta (2 copies); STCN (2 copies); A.J.J. van de Velde, "Zuid- en Noord-Ned. Oorspr. karton, papier gebruind, op het schutblad A.M.L.[edeboer?] Lit.: Saalmink I, p.261 Door een kleine beschadiging op de titelpagina is het jaar van uitgave niet vast te stellen (alleen het laatste cijfer is leesbaar: 0). Vergelijking met in de NCC opgenomen uitgaven van S. en W. Koene en met de bibliografie van Saalmink maakt het zeer waarschijnlijk dat het gaat om een uitgave uit 1810.
