High Noon in the Sinking City is a film and should be vie…wed in a cinema. Evident as it may seem, this assess- ment demands an explanation by way of an introduction: Antoine Prum's contribution to the Venice Biennale was shot in a now derelict film set located in Luxembourg, built in 2001 for the pur- pose of a hitherto undistributed feature flop. A striking monument to the country's fledgling attempts to create a film industry from scratch, this backlot is the fifth man in the plot. More than a bonus of exoticism to Mondo Veneziano's pitch, it was actually the spark that set the whole project off. Indeed, the film was born from the knowledge of the set's existence - and, more specifically, its impending demolition. Venice in Luxembourg was an offer Prum couldn't refuse. The Biennale subsequently became the means to realise the project - and not, as is usually the case, vice versa. Story - A Curator, a Painter, a Theorist, and a Convivial Artist meet in a deserted Venice and start spilling their professional gospels over a cup of coffee. In between talks, they bump each other off. So much for the main plot. Or rather antiplot, since Mondo Veneziano has a non-linear narrative, unfolding in what you can safely call an inconsistent reality. The film's backstory is the dis- cursive entanglement of a fundamentally clueless bunch of art- workers. The story's inciting incident is never mentioned in the film, but is implicit: the general feeling of dissatisfaction that haunts the art community, or as the synopsis put it, "the gap between theory and practice in art".
