Couverture souple. Condizione: Assez bon. Coll. "Etranges Etrangers". Géographie. Histoire. Rares planches n&b.

Leather. Condizione: Good. The very scarce first English edition of Le Bossu"s influential study of epic poetry, in a contemporary panelled calf binding. In a contemporary full panelled calf binding. First English edition. The first English translation of Rene Le Bossu"s important French critical treatise on epic poetry, translated into English by W. J., with a new original preface by the translator. Containing Andre Dacier"s essay upon satire and Fontenelle"s treatise upon pastorals. The hugely influential work by Bossu, which set the tone for criticism of the Heroic Poem in both France and England for the next century. French critic and poet Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux found this book extremely informative, and praised it highly. The leading doctrine of this criticism is that the subject of a poem should be chosen before the characters, and that all action should be arranged without reference to the personages in the scene. Rene Le Bossu (1631-1680) was a French critic and canon of the Abbey of Sainte-Genevieve, best known for hisTraite du poeme epique, a work defining the rules and principles of epic composition. With the armorial bookplate of Robert Chambré Vaughan, Esq., of Burlton Hall, Co. Salop, to the front pastedown. ESTC No.: R10431. Signatures: A4 a-T8 u4. Collated, complete. An important Restoration critical work, bringing French neoclassical theories of poetry to a wider English readership. In a contemporary full panelled calf binding.Front free endpaper largely cut out with small trimmed portion remaining to gutter. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in minor loss to calf. Joints cracked, but holding. Slight rubbing to boards with one or two light scratch marks. Bookplate of Robert Chambre Vaughan to the front paste down; ink shelf annotation to head of paste down. Small area of rubbing to front paste down, likely where an inscription has been erased. Hinges strained with cords exposed, but holding firm. Creasing to rear free endpaper. Slight discolouration from binder's glue to endpapers. First blank trimmed with loss to upper corner. Internally, firmly bound. Pages characteristically age toned, more so to fore edge of first and final few leaves. Previous owner's ink inscription to head of title page with creasing to the upper corner; horizontal ink stain to center, bleeding through slightly to A2. Slight ink marking to head of A2, A4, F8, G1, and H3, not affecting the text.Very light cockling to leaves. Good. None (illustratore). book.…
