Signed and inscribed by the Author. Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), xix, 333 pp. Good, with cello tape to endpapers; in a like, mylar protected dust jacket. Photographs gladly provided upon request. From dust jacket: The Civl War was, in a sense, a "musical war." During the first year alone, an estimated two thousand musical compositions were produced, and the outpouring continued so that by the end of the conflict more music had been created, played, and sung, perhaps, than during all our other wars combined. Abraham Lincoln -- rail-splitter, circuit lawyer, preserver of the Union and emancipator of the slaves -- was no musician. Yet he was extremely fond of music and as President he probably heard more music than any other occupant of the White House. He heard the old patriotic tunes and the new songs of the Civil War period. He listened to bands, choruses, and soloists. He came to know the songs and the singers, the bands and their leaders. He heard exuberant serenaders outside the White House and quiet singers within; he heard noisy bands in the streets of Washington and he listened to their soft strains at evening in many of the "hundred circling camps." Here, as told by Kenneth A. Bernard, is an account of the music of the era and of Lilncoln's relationship to it. Against a background of specific events, Professor Bernard shows how the music of the war was inspired, how it inspired and affected the soldiers and the folk back home, and, finally, how it inspired and affected Lincoln himself. Lincoln and the Music of the Civil War presents a fresh approach to an understanding and appreciation of the emotional side of the great conflict. No President, before or since, has been sung to and played to as much as was Lincoln. No President enjoyed the sound and sentiment of music any more than did Lincoln. Hardback. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition / 1st Printing - GOOD No dust jacket. A few pencil marginalia - unobtrusive., Binding is sound. 208 p. illus. (incl. ports., maps) 24 cm. A regimental history of the 398th Infantry, 100th Infantry Division, covering its organization, training, combat operations in Europe, and occupation duty through the end of the war. Edited by Bernard Boston and published by Infantry Journal Press in 1947, the volume traces the regiment from its mobilization at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on 15 December 1942, through stateside training (including Tennessee maneuvers) and deployment overseas via Camp Kilmer and the troopship USS General William H. Gordon to Marseille, France, in October 1944. The narrative then follows the 398th through the Vosges Mountain campaign, the crossing of the La Plaine River, and subsequent operations in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, emphasizing small-unit actions, terrain and weather difficulties, and the tactical learning curve of an inexperienced division in combat. The book describes fighting in French towns and rugged wooded country, river crossings under artillery and small-arms fire, advances into Germany (including border towns whose white flags signaled collapsing German resistance), and the regiment?s role in seizing and holding key ground against counterattacks.

Aggiungi al carrello2pp., 12mo. On bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'J. B. Burke' and signed 'H. Appleton' (a member of the Boston firm of publishers?). The letter reads: 'My dear Sir | I find that the 2d. part of your work "The visitation of Great Britain" has been published some time but I have not received mine. Will you be good enough to put one under cover with my name & an outer cover to address of the Hon Abbott Laurence Boston [businessman and philanthropist], and send it to John Miller Esq. No: 24 Henrietta St. Covent Garden, and I shall be sure to get it.' Miller, who traded from a variety of different addresses during a long career (see BBTI, where his details appear to be included in two or more entries), apparently ending in bankruptcy in 1865, was known as 'the American bookseller in London'.
