Temi ricorrenti come la ricerca di un tesoro, il reduce, la violenza postbellica e i tentativi di ricostruzione delineano un immaginario in cui la sconfitta sembra prevalere sulla vittoria. I "grigi" del titolo non coincidono solo con i vinti della Confederazione ma comprendono anche personaggi che, sfuggendo a identità rigide, mettono in crisi i miti fondativi della nazione.
