Original engraving "Le denier de César", after the painting by Valentin de Boulogne: the Pharisees show the coin to Christ, who points to the open hand, in a group of three half-length figures in strong chiaroscuro. Headed "Valentin", with "Nº 20" and "École Française"; lettered below "Dessiné par Bourdon", "Gravé à l'eau-forte par Devilliers" and "Terminé par Massard, père". The lettering records the usual division of labor in the great French engraved galleries: a draughtsman copies the painting, one engraver bites the copper in etching, and a second finishes the work with the burin. Medium: Etching finished with the burin. Artist / after: Valentin de Boulogne (1591-1632). Draughtsman: Bourdon. Engraver / lithographer: Devilliers (etching) and Massard the elder (finishing). Date: 19th century. Dimensions: 10.6 x 7.1 in (27 x 18 cm). Condition: Good. Small foxing spots scattered through the margins; the image is clean. Técnica: Aguafuerte terminado a buril. Autor: según Valentin de Boulogne (1591-1632). Dibujante: Bourdon. Grabadores: Devilliers (aguafuerte) y Massard padre (acabado). Fecha: siglo XIX. Medidas: 27 x 18 cm. Estado de conservación: buen estado; papel con manchitas de oxidación dispersas por los márgenes; la imagen se conserva limpia. Antigüedades y coleccionables > Arte. '240'Original antique print showing Moses holding the ten commandments.Made by Pieter van Lisebetten after Valentin de Boulogne.Etching / engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 22.5 x 33 cm (8.86 x 12.99 inch). Image size: 14.3 x 23.5 cm. (5.63 x 9.25 inch).MOSES-TEN COMMANDMENTS-PL. 240PCOX-E2-21BACKGROUND INFORMATIONFrom: 'Theatrum Pictorium', (transl.: Theatre of Painting), is a collection of prints published as a boook in the 1660s by David Teniers the Younger for his employer, the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. It was a depiction of 243 Italian paintings in the Archduke's collection of over 1300 paintings, with engravings of the paintings taken from small models that Teniers had personally prepared. A second edition with page numbers was published in 1673. During the years 1646-1656 Leopold Wilhelm was governor of the Netherlands and formed one of the greatest art collections of his age. Teniers effectively became its curator after the death of his predecessor Jan van den Hoecke in 1651. Leopold Wilhelm's collection came to hold works by Hans Holbein the Elder, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan van Eyck, Raphael, Giorgione, Paolo Veronese and more than 15 works by Titian. Teniers employed a team of 12 engravers for reproducing the 243 paintings in the Theatrum. He produced small copies in oil of each of the chosen paintings, issuing these as models to his engravers and 120 of which were auctioned by the estate of John Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough in 1886. Teniers' painted copies measuring approximately 17 x 25 cm are now spread among various collections. The Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery holds 14 of these works, the largest group in any public collection. Of the 12 engravers, the five who contributed most were Jan van Troyen with 56, Lucas Vorsterman the Younger with 52, Pieter van Lisebetten 40, Theodoor van Kessel 27, and Coryn or Quirin Boel 25. Johannes Popels contributed five engravings.
