A noter aussi qu'il met en scène la plupart des acteurs du Café de la Gare, qui y jouent différents rôles. Édition originale de la première monographie sur la chorée de Sydenham. On notera, au verso du titre, la signature manuscrite autographe de l'auteur attestant de l'authenticité de l'édition. Est-ce bien toujours la même maladie que l'on a désignée sous le nom de « danse de Saint-Guy » ? Cas isolés ou épidémies de convulsions, manie dansante. dès le Moyen-Âge les affligés, pour soulager leurs symptômes, se tournent vers Saint Guy (ou Saint Vitus) qui donne son nom au phénomène. Le médecin anglais Thomas Syndenham est le premier à ébaucher une description systématique de la maladie, qu'il appuie sur l'étude du cas de 5 patients : selon lui la danse de « Saint-Guy », caractérisée par des mouvements involontaires et contractions des muscles du tronc et des extrémités, affecte les enfants et pré-adolescents. Il faudra cependant attendre les travaux de Bouteille pour une étude approfondie. C'est également ce-dernier qui propose l'appellation « chorée », empruntée au latin « chorea », « danse en groupe, en choeur ». « Tout est extraordinaire dans cette Maladie ; son nom est ridicule, ses symptômes singuliers, son caractère équivoque; sa cause inconnue, son traitement problématique. De graves auteurs ont douté de son existence ; d'autres l'ont cru simulée, quelques-uns l'ont réputée surnaturelle et magique [.] » (avant-propos). Après avoir dressé un état de l'art, Bouteille distingue trois types de chorée : la « chorée essentielle », chorée prototypique telle que décrite par Sydenham ; la « chorée secondaire » succédant à une maladie (ou chute, ou même frayeur) dont elle est l'effet ; et enfin la « chorée fausse » présentant des symptômes similaires à ceux de la chorée mais dus en vérité à une autre maladie. On sait aujourd'hui que toute chorée de Syndenham est « secondaire », puisque l'infection du système nerveux central survient suite à une angine à streptocoque non-traitée. L'auteur n'omet pas de préciser ses indications curatives : saignées, administration de toniques et d'antispasmodiques.
