Ce film classé dans le cinéma fantastique, présente la particularité que tous ses dialogues se limitent à des grognements, des cris ou des hurlements et pourtant malgré l'emploi de ce langage non articulé, les situations et le contexte font que tous les échanges sont parfaitement intelligibles. A noter aussi qu'il met en scène la plupart des acteurs du Café de la Gare, qui y jouent différents rôles. Très bon état de l'ensemble. Synopsis : Bruno Calgagni rentre en France. Toxicomane, parti six ans plus tôt pour les États-Unis, il y a purgé une peine de cinq ans de prison pour trafic d'héroïne. Pendant son absence sa mère est morte. Il se rend chez son père qui l'accueille, mais la situation devient vite invivable, son père l'accusant d'être responsable de la mort de sa mère. Bruno travaille comme manutentionnaire dans des conditions difficiles. Le contrat terminé il trouve un emploi dans une librairie, où officie également Catherine, une ancienne toxicomane. Peu de temps avant la sortie du film, Patrick Dewaere s'est violemment emporté envers Patrice de Nussac, journaliste au Journal du dimanche qui lui avait promis de ne pas dévoiler son prochain mariage avec Élisabeth Chalier, la mère de sa seconde fille. Trahi par celui qu'il considérait son ami, Dewaere le frappe d'un coup de poing. Par la suite l'acteur subit un véritable boycott de la presse, des médias et des producteurs qui hésitent désormais à l'employer. Il n'est alors plus interviewé et fait sans précédent en France, son nom est supprimé de la distribution du film dans plusieurs journaux, voire est remplacé par des initiales employées dans une ambigüité à connotation péjorative : « P.D. » C'est Gérard Depardieu qui était pressenti pour le rôle-titre par Claude Sautet. Mais il manquait à Depardieu « quelque chose d'angélique et d'enfantin ». Bel ensemble.
