The author explores Chapelain's influence on the development of French literature, particularly his role in shaping the principles of classicism. The book delves into the ideas presented in Chapelain's 1620 preface to the epic poem "Adonis," revealing his emphasis on reason, vraisemblance, and the importance of the "three unities" in drama. Through a meticulous examination of Chapelain's work, the author demonstrates how his theories laid the groundwork for the literary movement that would come to dominate French literature for centuries to come. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and students of French literature, providing a comprehensive understanding of Chapelain's contributions to the field and his enduring influence on the French literary landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The author argues that these forms correspond to distinct stages of social and cultural development, and that each form dominates a particular era. Drawing on examples from French and Italian literature, the author illustrates how lyricism expresses youthful exuberance and faith, epic embodies the maturity and action of a society, and drama reflects a time of crisis and questioning. The author demonstrates that this pattern has held true throughout history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. This book offers a fresh perspective on the evolution of literature, showing how it is deeply connected to the broader forces that shape human societies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The author's in-depth analysis illuminates the themes of free speech, political resistance, and the enduring power of satire in shaping public opinion. (= Basler Beiträge zur Geschichtswissenschaft, Bd. 122). - Ernest Bovet (geb. 1870, Lausanne, gest.
