In addition to being technically proficient, Rulofson had a knack for business, growing the studio with plenty of advertising, as well as supplying prints to newspapers in exchange for bylines. The pair were responsible for numerous portraits of leading Californians . Rulofson's photographic talent was renowned. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. First edition in the earliest state of the original 125 fascicles, plus the final Supplement, Bibliography, and Introduction, contained in 14 blue cloth clamshell boxes. Large 4to, wrappers (some loose, 2 back wrappers missing) and cloth-backed boards, many of the latter with dust jackets (jackets often with nicks, tears, splits and some with occasional loss); with many prefaces, prefatory notes, titles, half titles, and assorted ephemera, etc., most not included in the book edition; a complete set in the most desirable state. This copy belonged to Fitzedward Hall (1825-1901), the American Orientalist and philologist, and the author of several works on Sanskrit and Hindi, who was, "with another US citizen, Dr. William Chester Minor [the 'professor' in The Professor and the Madman], one of the most important (and most obsessive) collaborators the OED Project's director Sir James Murray (1837-1915) had, and is recognized as such in many of the prefaces to the Dictionary itself" (Wikipedia). The first fascicle, A-ANT, is inscribed to Hall by the editor A. H. Murray three days prior to its publication date of February 1, 1884. "To F. Hall, Esq. D.C.L. / With Compliments and very special Thanks of / James A. H. Murray / 29 Jany. 1884." The second fascicle, ANT-BATTEN, is also inscribed: "To Fitzedward Hall Esq. D.C.L. / with the deeply grateful regards of / James A. H. Murray / Oxford 12 Nov 1885." Says Murray in the introductory matter to A-ANT: "Henry Hucks Gibbs, Esq., M.A., and Fitzedward Hall, Esq., D.C.L. (who have given general help in every direction) .Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Hall have read all but the earliest proof-sheets, supplied deficiencies, and given valuable literary criticism." Later, Murray noted: "Time would fail to tell of the splendid assistance rendered to the Dictionary by Dr. Fitzedward Hall, who devotes nearly his whole day to reading the proofs.and to supplementing, correcting, and increasing the quotations taken from his own exhaustless stores. When the Dictionary is finished, no man will have contributed to its illustrative wealth so much as Fitzedward Hall. Those who know his books know the enormous wealth of quotation which he brings to bear upon every point of English literary usage; but my admiration is if possible increased when I see how he can cap and put the cope-stone on the collections of our 1500 readers." After his death in February 1901 (when the dictionary was up to the letter 'J'), "Murray corresponded with Hall's son to try to find and reference the supplies of quotations his father had noted but not submitted, with unclear results." There are perhaps a couple of hundred or so annotations in the early fascicles by Fitzedward Hall. They are written in a tiny hand, and are often in abbreviated or shorthand form, and frankly, difficult to read, let alone parse. "In 1919-1920, J. R. R. Tolkien was employed by the OED, researching etymologies of the Waggle to Warlock range;[25] later he parodied the principal editors as "The Four Wise Clerks of Oxenford" in the story Farmer Giles of Ham" (Wikipedia). Aggiungi al carrelloAn exceptionally uncommon pair of cartes mosaique by the San Francisco photography studio of Bradley and Rulofson, with "Celebrities" showing the heads of over one hundred actors and actresses of the period, while "Men of Mark" depicts a similar number of statesmen, noblemen, artists, authors, and soldiers from across the world. Bradley and Rulofson's cartes mosaiques were based on the of French photographer André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri's carte-de-visite mosaique, patented in 1863, which involved taking photographic prints, cutting out the various people in the pictures, and placing the cutout figures alongside, above, and below each other, allowing the photographer to combine the portraits of two or three people up to a thousand and sell them to the public for the same price as they would usually pay for the carte of a single person, thus making it even more affordable for the public to own photographic portraits of their favorite celebrities. By combining many images on a single card (far more than did Disdéri), Bradley and Rulofson created a dense and richly varied composition that pushed the boundaries of photographic art; their work is often seen as a precursor to the later development of photomontage in the art world. Bradley and Rulofson's "Celebrities" carte mosaique was described as "A photographic gem, in the shape of a group of 110 of the more celebrated actors and actressesand every head stands out as clearly and distinct as if it were on a separate card." (Bradley & Rulofson), with "Men of Mark" considered "a companion picture to. 'Celebrities'" that "shows 110 photographs of 'men of distinction' on the Pacific Coast." Subjects include Hubert Howe Bancroft; Dom Pedro, emperor of Brazil; P.T. Barnum; King Kalakana of Hawaii; Mark Twain; Phil Roach, then editor of the San Francisco Examiner; Admiral Farragut; Charles Crocker; and Joaquin Miller among many others. Dom Pedro is quoted on the rear of the card as saying his photographic portraits by Bradley and Rulofson's were "The finest photographs I ever had." King Kalakaua is also quoted referring to Bradley and Rulofson as "The best in the World." Unlike "Men of Mark," the key to "Celebrities" was issued separately, and is not present here. Henry William Bradley (1813-1891) came to California from North Carolina during the Gold Rush and opened a San Francisco photography studio in 1850. William Herman Rulofson (1826-1878), a native of Canada, also came to California in 1849, and started prospecting in Sonora. He began photographing miners in 1850 from a mobile daguerreotype wagon and maintained a studio there for a decade. In 1861 he partnered with Bradley in San Francisco, with Rulofson managing the portrait gallery, and Bradley overseeing the photographic materials business and a growing publishing enterprise (Shields). These important cartes mosaique are exceptionally scarce. OCLC locates two copies of "Celebrities," at The Museum of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the State Library of Victoria (Australia), and three of "Men of Mark," held at the Bancroft Library, the National Library of Australia, and the Museum of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
