Staple Bound Pamphlet. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Original set (not the 2007 reprint), complete, of the 20 pamphlets comprising the Great Bear Pamphlet series, a side project of Dick Higgins's Something Else press, designed to bring the avant garde to the masses in affordable doses. Noted Higgins, as quoted on dickhiggins(dot)org: "On my desk was a folder of Alison Knowles' performance pieces, too free for a book but enough to make an attractive unit of some kind. "Why not," I thought, "make a series of 16-page pamphlets, miniatures in a sense of our books, and (hopefully) as refreshing as this water I'm drinking?" Thus began our Great Bear Pamphlet series. Sometimes the books were too expensive for our friends to buy, but the pamphlets? Not really, though to hear our friends talk one wouldn't believe that. The first ten pamphlets parallel the books we were doing, for the most part - small works by Alison Knowles, myself, George Brecht, Claes Oldenburg, Allan Kaprow, Wolf Vostell, Jackson MacLow and a collection of manifestos by all kinds of interesting people having common only their innovative thinking - Öyvind Fahlström, Bob Watts, the W.E.B. DuBois clubs (a communist youth group, though we were scarcely communists), Nam June Paik, Ay-O, John Giorno, Diter Rot (as Dieter Roth then spelled his name), and others. Later, in 1968-69, a generous friend made possible a second series too, works by Filliou, David Antin, Bengt af Klintberg, Luigi Russolo, Diter Rot and others. The pamphlets, all twenty of them, were able to get places that the larger books couldn't. For example, in the late 1960's they were sold from a rack beside the produce stand at the Berkeley Co-op in Berkeley, California; we were always delighted by the notion of a shopping basket containing ice cream, the makings of a good salad - and our pamphlets!" -- Dick Higgins, "The Something Else Press: Notes for a History to Be Written Some Day," New Lazarus Review, Vol. 2, No.1, Utica: New York, 1979". The pamphlets exist in at least two states, the earliest listing on the back cover up to ten titles, sometimes others in preparation, the later state listing the entire set. Printings are, to this cataloguer, impossible to determine. All but Manifestos (32 pages) are 16 pages, each on different color paper; the Cage pamphlet is printed in several colors & typefaces. All show very light wear, flaws noted. Complete set, comprised of: Knowles, Alison. [no title]. 1965. Compilation of her performance pieces. Later state. Higgins, Dick. A Book About Love & War & Death Canto One. 1965. Fiction. Later state. Blemish inside front cover, affecting, slightly the cover & first page. Brecht, George. Chance-Imagery. 1966. Influential tract on randomizing art production. Early state, listing 3 titles, + 4 in preparation. Oldenburg, Claes. Injun & Other Histories (1960). 1966. "Two scenarios from an Incomplete Pageant of America", with two drawings. Later state. Light creasing. Hansen, Al. Incomplete Requiem for W. C. Fields. 1966. Neo-Dada poem, perhaps. Later state. Rothenberg, Jerome. Ritual: A Book of Primitive Rites and Events. 1966. Scenarios for Happenings. Early state, listing 6 titles - and demonstrating that the series was not published in numerical order - plus 4 ready soon. Light creasing. Kaprow, Allan, Some Recent Happenings. 1966. Early state, listing 5 titles, 3 more coming soon. [Higgins, Dick, editor] Manifestos. 1966. Early state, listing 10 titles. Contributors are Ay-o, Philip Corner, the W.E.B. Du Bois Clubs, Oyvind Fahlström, Robert Filliou, John Giorno, Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Allan Kaprow, Alison Knowles, Nam June Paik, Diter Rot, Jerome Rothenberg, Wolf Vostell, Robert Watts, Emmett Williams. Aggiungi al carrelloCard box. (210 x 160 x 20 mm). Large card box with printing to replicate a matchbox, containing a smaller real matchbox with similar printing to front cover contsaining four metal screw-hooks; also included loose are cards and booklets, a text by Cladders, a list of works by Robert Filliou and George Brecht before their collaboration, and then work completed by the pair during their stay at Villefranche, all on different paper stock and with the upper right corner removed in order to fit within the box together with the matchbox. Robert Filliou and George Brecht's Mönchengladbach kassettenpublikation catalogue / multiple. From the edition limited to 440 numbered copies. The exhibition 'La Cedille Qui Sourit' was held at the Städtisches Museum Mönchengladbach from June 18th to July 27th, 1969. The three parts of the joint exhibition were: 'I. Vorspiel zum Cédille / Prelude to the Cedilla / Prélude à la Cédille. II. Le Cédille Qui Sourit 12 rue du May, Villefranche-sur-Mer (A. M.), September 1965 - Oktober 1968. III. Das ständige Geschehen / The Eternal Network / La Fête Permanente. Was das Cédille sein wird (ist) / What the Cedilla will be (is) / Çe que deviendra la Cédille (est devenue).' 'La Cédille Qui Sourit' was Brecht and Filliou's artist run shop, or rather 'non-shop' - the raison-d'etre was to eschew typical commercial activities - in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Stocked with artist books and multiples from Filliou and Brecht's Fluxus associates, together with examples of their own work and other ephemera from their working process: letters, jokes, puzzles, recipes, poems and sketches. The venture lasted (as indicated above) from 1965 to 1968 before its metamorphosis into 'The Eternal Network'. Whilst the format of boxes as exhibition catalogues follows the Mönchengladbach format, the use of a matchbox design was unique, and appears to have been the brainchild of Museum Director Johnanes Cladders.
