Breit writes: "The letters are remarkable in at least two major ways. They reflect with agonizing completeness the artist at bay, cornered as it were by poverty, the world's indifference, and his savage inclination to alcohol. And they also reflect an awareness, a minute knowledge, of what he was up to in his work." The letters surrounding the writing and publication of "Under the Volcano" are also fascinating. Includes a chronology, appendices (mostly of letters to Malcolm and Marjorie Lowry) and an index. He wrote interesting letters as well as interesting works of literature.…
