Deux ans : c'est ce qu'il aura fallu à l'association Suzanne pour retrouver plus de 1 500 toiles de Robert Breitwieser et offrir au peintre mulhousien son catalogue raisonné. "Il y a déjà peu d'ouvrages consacrés aux peintres alsaciens, mais celui-ci est un des premiers qui soit consacré à un seul d'entre-eux", explique Jean-François Keller, le président de l'association. Né à Mulhouse en 1899, Robert Breitwieser est considéré comme un des meilleurs représentants de l'école impressionniste alsacienne. . L'uvre de Robert Breitwieser, considérée comme une des plus brillantes de la peinture alsacienne du XXème siècle, s'inscrit dans la richesse d'un héritage culturel particulier : celui d'une région interface, historique et géographique, sorte de variable d'ajustement entre la France et l'Allemagne dont les rivalités ont considérablement perturbé la vie artistique. Mais, paradoxalement, rien de ce tumulte ne transparaît dans les tableaux de Robert Breitwieser qui nous laisse une peinture sereine, paisible, apaisante Né à Mulhouse en 1899, successivement citoyen allemand, français, puis de nouveau allemand et français, Robert Breitwieser appartient à cette génération d'Alsaciens qui, selon Tomi Ungerer, "avaient plus de cartes d'identité que d'identité." Mais en Art, "il n'y a pas de frontières, il n'y a que des émulations qui enrichissent la création." Il va à l'essentiel; le dépouillement du dessin est tel qu'il frôle l'abstraction. Dans ses tableaux, c'est la couleur qui prime. C'est d'elle qu'émane la lumière, le mouvement, le rythme, la dynamique.
