Hardback. Condizione: New. 1st. This book presents a comprehensive overview of endangered languages with a global coverage. It features such well-known specialists as Michael Krauss, Willem F. H. Adelaar, Denny Moore, Colette Grinevald, Akira Yamamoto, Roger Blench, Bruce Connell, Tapani Salminen, Olga Kazakevich, Aleksandr Kibrik, Jonathan Owens, David Bradley, George van Driem, Nicholas Evans, Stephen A. Wurm, Darrell Tryon and Matthias Brenzinger. The contributions are unique in analysing the present extent and the various kinds of language endangerment by applying shared general indicators for the assessment of language endangerment. Apart from presenting the specific situations of language endangerment at the sub-continental level, the volume discusses major issues that bear universally on language endangerment. The actual study of endangered languages is carefully examined, for example, against the ethics and pragmatics of fieldwork. Practical aspects of community involvement in language documentation are discussed, such as the setting up of local archives and the training of local linguists. Numerous case studies illustrate different language shift environments with specific replacing factors, such as colonial and religious conquests, migrations and governmental language education. The book is of interest to students and scholars of linguistics with particular focus on endangered languages (and their documentation), typology, and sociolinguistics as well as to anthropologists and language activists.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Cloth hardcover, xvii + 454 pages, NOT ex-library. Interior is clean and bright throughout, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show gentle handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- A collection of essays that provides a global assessment of language endangerment. It combines theoretical frameworks for understanding why languages disappear with detailed regional reports from around the world. The book moves beyond simple statistics to explore the socio-political and economic drivers of language shift. The Nature of Endangerment: It distinguishes between "language death" (loss of speakers) and "language attrition" (loss of structural complexity), examining how globalisation and urbanisation accelerate these processes. Language Policy and Ideology: Contributors analyse how state policies, such as "one nation, one language" ideologies, actively marginalise minority tongues. Documentation and Revitalisation: The text discusses the ethical and practical challenges linguists face when documenting "last speakers" and the potential for digital archives to aid in future revitalisation efforts. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to "State of the Art" reports from every continent, providing a snapshot of linguistic diversity circa 2007: - Africa: Highlights the impact of "mega-languages" like Swahili and Hausa on smaller ethnic languages; - The Americas: Reports on the critical status of indigenous languages in both North and South America, focusing on the legacy of residential schools and forced assimilation; - Asia and the Pacific: Coverage of the extreme linguistic density of Papua New Guinea and the threats facing the diverse languages of the Caucasus and Siberia; - Europe: Examination of "lesser-used" languages like Saami, Breton, and various Celtic tongues. Key Contributions: The UNESCO Framework: Several chapters discuss the development of the UNESCO Vitality and Endangerment scale, which became the international standard for categorising how "at risk" a language is. This volume is considered an essential reference for sociolinguists, anthropologists, and policymakers. It is frequently cited for its comprehensive data and for highlighting that nearly half of the world's 6,000+ languages are currently under threat. -- Contents: Language Endangerment Throughout the World / Matthias Brenzinger; Classification and Terminology for Degrees of Language Endangerment / Michael Krauss; Threatened Languages in Hispanic South America / Willem F. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Energy challenges have emerged in MENA countries which threaten security of supply, fiscal stability, and environmental integrity. While the magnitude of the challenges evidently differs from country to country within MENA, reflecting the specific national conditions and circumstances, the energy challenges themselves resemble each other across borders given the similarities in the underlying drivers and the governing energy policies. Compounding the pressure to act, these challenges must be expected to become more severe in view of the current policies, in combination with the emerging demographic and economic trends. Rising living standards, especially among the region s expanding urban population, are set to boost per capita energy consumption. The research project presented in this book aims at making a dual contribution to policy reform in MENA countries. Firstly, it proposes a MENA-specific methodology for the development of integrated, comprehensive energy strategies. Secondly, it puts forward policy recommendations for the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah based on a real-world application of the methodology.
