Couverture rigide. Condizione: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris 2015. 1 Volume/1. Aggiungi al carrelloEnlarged edition of an extensive pictorial course in practical perspective for use of artists, architects and professional draughtsmen, with 60 large and beautifully engraved plates. The course starts with the principles of geometry, and then delves into columns, arches, vaulted ceilings, staircases, perspective for the theatre, and military perspective, including fortifications. It was created by architect and cartographer Louis Bretez (d. 1737), who is well known for designing the famous "plan de Turgot", a splendid bird's eye view of Paris. La perspective pratique de l'architecture is his book and was first published in 1706. The present edition is the second, which has been enlarged with five additional plates. With a bookplate ("De la bibliothèque de M. . (?)") mounted on the second free flyleaf . The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed, the boards are somewhat rubbed, lacking the title label on the spine, the hinges have weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact, missing a portion of leather at the head and foot of the spine. The title page is slightly foxed, some of the plates are slightly soiled, the edges of plate 19 are slightly frayed. Otherwise in good condition.l Fowler 66 (mentions only 4 additional plates); Vagnetti EIVb3; cf. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very good. First. A VAST MAP OF A VANISHED PARIS. [Paris?: no publisher, 1739-1740]. First edition. Folio (21 5/8" x 17 5/16", 550mm x 439mm): with 21 engraved double-page plates: a key map and 20 sectional maps (with sections 18 and 19, splitting the cartouche, already joined and folding). Bound in contemporary (publisher's?) mottled calf, with the arms of Paris gilt to the center of each board. Gilt border (fleur-de-lys alternating with palmettes within several rolls) to both boards, with fleur-de-lys corner-pieces. On the spine, nine raise bands, with fleurs-de-lys gilt to each panel. Title gilt to red morocco in the second panel. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards, carrying over into the inside dentelle. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt. Tail restored, with modern tooling. Restored patch to the front board. Some darkening and cracking to the borders and edges of the boards, and scuffing to the spine. Occasional soiling or small closed edge-tears. Altogether very good. Michel-Étienne Turgot (1690-1751), Marquess of Sousmont and the de facto mayor of Paris -- Prévôt des marchands or merchants' provost -- from 1729 to 1740 is best remembered for his commissioning of a plan of the city unlike any that preceded it. Its scale -- over 8' tall and 10' wide -- and precision (rendered at a scale of ca. 1:400) are almost incalculable. Turgot commissioned Louis Bretez (1737) to resurvey the city, giving him leave to enter structures and estates to carry out detailed measurements and drawings -- a task that took fully two years. This was a project of civil pride rather than necessity, and so of course it gained a great many supporters and sponsors at a great rate, whose names appear in the cartouche after Turgot's: Henry Millon, Exquier Con.er du Roi, Quartinier, Philippes le Fort, Ex.er Jean Claude Fauconnet de Vildé, Ec.er Con.er du Roi, et de la Ville, Acovat en la Cour Expéditionnaire de Cour de Rome; Claude Augustin Josset, Ex.er Con.er du Roi Acovat en la Cour Expédit.re de Cour de Rome; Echevins de la Ville de Paris Antoine Moriau, Ec.er Procureur et Avocat du Roi, et de la Ville, Jean Baptiste Julien Taitbout, Chevalier de l'Ordre du Roi, Greffier en Chef, Jacques Boucot, Chevalier de l'Ordre du Roi, Receveur. With such endorsements and access, Bretez and his engraver Claude Lucas have created an intimate portrait of a vanished city; the destruction of the Revolution and the rebuilding of Hausmann under Napoleon III would fundamentally reshape the City of Light. Aggiungi al carrelloPrint. A vintage print of the simplified, general overview map of the 1739 Turgot map of Paris. In 1734, Michel-Etienne Turgot, then mayor of Paris, contracted Louis Bretez to draw up a plan of Paris and its suburbs. Bretez was given permission to enter all the mansions, houses, and gardens in Paris, in order to gain accurate measurements for his drawings. It would take two years. Claude Lucas then engraved the 21 copper plates of the plan in 1736 and an atlas of 20 detailed isometric projection aerial-view maps depicting every building in Paris and one overview map was published in 1739. The simplified general map gives an overview of the sectional maps and indicates their locations in a 4 x 5 grid. This print on offer was printed from the original plates, late 1800s to early 1900s. Image size: 32 x 24 inches. Paper size: 35.25 x 24.75 inches, on thick laid paper, with plate-embossed marks visible to the back. Condition: Light tanning overall, roughing to the edges, and a moisture stain to the back which isn't visible on the front; image is fine. The print has been stored rolled for many years. Will be mailed rolled in a heavy card tube and shipped the next business day after payment is received.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of this famous map, "a major record of the architecture and gardens of Paris of the period, of much documentary interest to historians and archaeologists today" (Millard). Like a number of copies encountered, this one is handsomely bound in period red morocco with the gilt arms of Paris on the covers. Turgot (1690-1751), mayor of Paris and father of the Physiocrat Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, presided over the improvement of the city in the 1730s and became president of the Grand Conseil in 1741. In 1734, he commissioned Louis Bretez, professor of perspective at the Académie de Saint-Luc, and the printmaker Claude Lucas to design and engrave this map. "The ambitious project received a highly conservative interpretation. In the face of new developments in geometry that were being applied to map-making, Bretez chose to continue the conventional system of bird's-eye representation. The Plan de Paris is the last major example of this type of view-plan. It provides an unnatural 'forced' perspective in which all the buildings of Paris, including civic structures, churches, and even private houses with heir courts and gardens, are represented in three-dimensional quarter view. In addition, the plan is oriented not to the north but to the east, so that the viewer can see the portals of the churches, which are turned toward the west. The resulting plan is the most regular of this system. Although it is not an accurate map, it does provide a knowledge of the state of Paris in 1734 that is both comprehensive and unique" (Millard). Millard, French 39. Folio (554 x 430 mm). Engraved folding key map and 20 detailed maps by Claude Lucas after Louis Bretez, on heavy laid paper, all double-page and mounted on stubs, maps 18 and 19 (incorporating title within a cartouche) joined and folding, all except the key map within an ornamental border. Contemporary red morocco, spine with nine raised bands, compartments with gilt paired fillet frames enclosing fleur-de-lys cornerpieces and central motif, olive green label, sides with border of fleur-de-lys and palmettes, fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, large coat of arms of Paris within a rococo cartouche, gilt edge roll and turn-ins, Placard pattern marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Joints refurbished, a couple of wormholes to spine, a few old abrasions and marks to covers, internally some finger-soiling, toning and foxing but overall very good.…

Aggiungi al carrelloAn extraordinary engraved map of Paris and surroundings in 20 enormous sheets, showing the city and its buildings in a bird's-eye view (the buildings in an orthographic projection, nearly isometric, but mostly from a slightly higher angle, around 45°). It covers the area within about 3 kilometres of the centre of Paris at a scale of about 1:2000, showing every house and every other building in great detail with windows and doors, as well as the layout of gardens, parks and orchards, boats in and beside the rivers, and in the surrounding countryside also topographic features. No map gives a clearer idea of what Paris looked like ca. 1740. Michel Étienne Turgot (1690-1751), "prévôt des marchands" of Paris (more or less the mayor) and one of the most powerful men in France, ordered its production, which occupied the years 1734 to 1739. It was surveyed and drawn by Louis Bretez, engraved by Claude Lucas, and the lettering executed by "Aubin". A note on the key map indicates the main map was sold both assembled as a wall map and bound in segments as an atlas. It served both practical aims as a reliable guide to the city and showed off the city's glory. The present copy, in its splendid gold-tooled red morocco binding with the Paris coat of arms and the extensive use of French lilies, certainly appears to have been intended as a presentation copy that the city might give to influential people or honoured visitors, but it contains no record of its provenance. Cohen & De Ricci notes that copies in red morocco "de Padeloup" (perhaps merely meaning in the general style associated with Antoine Michel Padeloup, royal binder from 1733) are known with either the arms of Paris or the royal arms. With an occasional small tear, 3 entering 1 to 3 cm into the map image, but all sheets in very good condition. The binding shows minor damage at the corners and slight wear to the hinges, but is also very good. A remarkably well-preserved copy of the most magnificent map of Paris.l BMC maps 3, col. 306; Cohen & De Ricci, p. 807; IKAR (2 copies); for the Paris arms: Olivier 2121 no. 3. Bound as an atlas (but with segments 18 and 19, containing the cartouche, assembled to make a long fold-out) in contemporary gold-tooled red morocco, with the maps attached to stubs (so they open nearly flat) sewn on 9 supports, each board with as centrepiece the Paris coat of arms (a ship with chief a field of fleurs-de-lis) in a slightly asymmetrical decorated cartouche of branches and architectural elements; in a frame made from rolls with alternating fleurs-de-lis and crests (large on the inside, small on the outside) and a large fleur-de-lis inside each corner. The spine has a morocco spine-label with "PLANS|DE|PARIS" in the 2nd of 10 compartments and each of the others with a frame of double fillets containing a large fleur-de-lis, a smaller one in each corner, 10 stars and 6 rosettes. Gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins, headbands in red, white and green, marbled endpapers in a placard design in red, blue, yellow and green in that order, combed in a wavy manner (teeth about 12 mm apart) then sprinkled with white and finally curled (the first three colours similar to Wolfe 27 & 28). An enormous engraved map of Paris in 20 numbered sheets plus a key map, at a scale of about 1:2000, each segment measuring 55 x 84 cm (plate size 51.5 x 80.5 cm; image 48 x 79 cm) which would give an assembled map with image size about 240 x 316 cm! The key map is slightly larger than the segments and folds out at the head. With a large decorative title cartouche centred at the foot (topped by a female allegorical figure with a mural crown and a shield with the Paris coat of arms, flanked by Fortune blowing a trumpet and a putto with surveying instruments) and a compass rose at upper right (north below left).…

Aggiungi al carrelloFIRST EDITION. 20 original engraved double page sheets (each c. 52 x 80 cm) here presented as 20 framed panels each measuring c. 56 x 85 cm giving a total wall space of 280 x 340 cm. A fascinating and colossal view of Paris and amongst the greatest city views of all time. Turgot's map of Paris is possibly the most ambitious urban mapping ever undertaken. This map shows the whole of 18th century Paris and offers an expansive perspective on the city before Baron Georges Eugène Haussmann's 19th-century redesign. Turgot, who held the mayor-like office of Prevôt des Marchands de Paris, commissioned Louis Bretez and Claude Lucas to produce this map. Oriented to the east on an axonometric projection, this map is best understood as an aerial view where in every building, window, tree, shadow, and park are shown from an equidistant aerial perspective. In order to produce the thousands of sketches and surveys required to complete this map, Bretez was issued a permit to enter every building in Paris. It took the team nearly five years of exhaustive sketching and surveying to assemble this masterpiece. A Monumental Achievement With unprecedented access to the properties of Paris and an official mandate, Bretez achieved outstanding detail and accuracy. The buildings of Paris are presented as one would have seen them at the time. The Louvre, the Tuileries Garden, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Champs Élysées can all be easily recognised. The Bastille, the flashpoint of the French Revolution which would start 58 years later, is depicted as well. Michel-Etienne Turgot (1690-1751), Louis XV's Prévot des Marchands, commissioned this plan in 1734 from Louis Bretez, a sculptor, painter and perspective specialist, who used the conventional bird's-eye representation isometric projection. The stunning result shows maps with great and decorative detail, being an important record of the architecture and gardens of Baroque Paris, the world capital at the time. This was the last major example of this type of plan. Turgot was chief of the municipality of Paris as provost of merchants the equivalent of today's mayor. He was the father of the famous economist and statesman Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, whom history remembers chiefly as an early advocate for economic liberalism. Turgot was motivated to commission a map of Paris by his will to champion the reputation of the city for Parisian, provincial or foreign elites. As such he asked Louis Bretez, a French architect, cartographer and professor of perspective (who belonged to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture), to draw up the plan of Paris and its suburbs. Over his two years of work 1734-1736, Bretez was granted access to all the houses and gardens he needed to visit in order to take the relevant measurements.…
