SB. iv + 74pp +5 plates & tables.Published Price £11.50 The Peninsula War was notable for several sieges and stormings, most famously those of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. Both these actions are discussed in this rare and concise book by an officer of the Royal Horse Artillery. May attributes the rapid fall of both fortresses to British artillery tactics, which carefully concentrated on battering a breach in the defences, and the superiority of British iron cannon to their brass equivalents. Illustrated by a plan of attack during an artillery siege, and tables showing the results of test comparisons between brass and iron ordnance.

Very good, bit of shallow wear head of spine; there is a tear to page 203/204 with slight loss of text.

Pages have browned and have foxing. I have checked for missing pages ( 527-572 have been torn out ). Many of the pages have not been cut either on the top or the edge. I don't have a list of the maps or plates to check for them but there were no spots that I could tell whether something had been removed. If you have a list and are interested in the book. I will look for them ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 693 pages.

"In this work, [Jones] fearlessly exposed the deficiencies of the engineer service, which he attributed to the ignorance and military incapacity of the board of ordnance" (DNB). Bookplate of Sir Charles Wolseley (1769-1849; reform member of parliament during the 1810s and 1820s) on the front pastedown. Later black three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, endpapers, and edges, gilt title on spine; spine somewhat faded, but a very good copy. (11135).

Dark brown cloth hardcover with decorative blind stamped borders and gilt illustration of Oseola on the front cover. Gilt title and publisher name stamped on the newer brown cloth spine. Frontispiece, title page, prliminary pages, folding map, and publisher catalog in back have moderate foxing. Light toning to the rest of the text. Map has a very small chip bottom edge and an approx. A 5"-6" closed split on a lower fold (below Key Largo) with no loss of content.

Old bookplate on the inside front cover with coat of arms and the name "Blantyre." Blue rubberstamp on the second blank page from the Marine Corps Historical Library. A smaller stamp of theirs is on the top of the final page of the text and copyright page (where it is over-stamped "withdrawn.") The decorative goldwork on the spine is faded and the hinges are a bit weak and scuffed, but all still structural and intact. Maroon title label on the spine. It looks as though the hinged have been professionally repaired on the inside - invisible at the front and showing just a strip of repair paper at the rear. Binding good and tight. Text block complete. There are 8 large folding plates at the end, both maps and fortification diagrams. They are all in good shape, with only the modest toning from age that is expected.
